Archery Rosie (late)
I figured since I was in the mood to learn how to post pictures I would put this up with a story. I spent the first half of the season calling for a friend that had never shot a big bull and we had a lot of action. The first full two weeks of the season we were able to get some interaction with the great wapiti every time we went out which was every day. Some were just short evening hunts but on the weekends we were able to get out in the mornings. We had alot of things go wrong as usual the swirling wind has a way of scewing things up. All my hunting was done on public land. The second Saturday we went after a bull that we had going Thursday evening but was in a spot we couldn't get to. We got him lit up first thing in the morning and started climbing a hour later we had him within thirty yards screaming and a few cow calls later he was at twenty five feet. At this point my buddy shot which clipped him across the outside of the shoulder. This bull was a 300 class six by six (ouch). The following week I screwed my back up which took me out of the mix for the rest of the season until the last weekend. Saturday morning rolled around and I was so tired that when I woke up I said the heck with it I will stay home. About a hour of this and my guilt of the season slipping away made me get up so I left the house at the crack of eight. I hiked up into one of my spots and started cow calling and about the third set up I thought I heard something coming one more series of cow calls and I knew I heard something comming. For you that don't know me lets say I'm hearing challenged to say the least. This bull came in at a fast trot and was on me fast and I was out of a good postion to shoot. But at twenty five yards he slammed on the brakes with his head behind three big trees which allowed me to get the bow drawn at this point he is under me comming from left to right. He hit a clear lane at twenty yards and I cow called with my mouth (no call) and he slammed on the brakes (bad move) I was shooting down hill at a fairly steep angle and just drilled him, at this point he took off again to my right and I called again. This time he was at thirty yards slightly quartered away so the launch sequence for missle two was enacted. At the shot the arrow hit the off shoulder and knocked him down in the front end> He got back up and made it ten feet before going down for good. Sorry for the blood in the picture and I removed the arrow before the picture was taken on a timer at a steep angle down hill. I forgot to add that the second arrow entered about two inches from the first.

Congratulations on a fine bull.
Persistence pays off. As long as there is season left, you have to hunt!

Re: Archery Rosie (late)
I actually like the timing of this- makes it feels like it's not that far away until we can chase them again. GREAT job on a beautiful bull. Congrats!

Re: Archery Rosie (late)
I love it when you get a late start and everything just falls together. I did the same thing this year on my first trophy buck.
Good job.

Re: Archery Rosie (late)
Just as well that you shot him. He wouldn't have made it through the winter with that stick in his eye anyway...

Congrats on a fine bull! I agree those late starts work. A few years ago we had 4 Ochoco cow tags. Hunted hard opening day and slept in a little past the alarm Sunday am. Decided to have breakfast and make it a full day out at 9am. Ended up "hunting" for about an hour and filled all 4 tags. All of them whole in the truck.

Hi Jeff hows Matt? It wasn't the one I was looking for but with two days left and the wife saying I had better kill something after hunting for my buddy he worked for the meat. The one I killed last year was a lot better bull and I didn't mount him. I want one around 300 to justify the cost.

Yes that is right and there wasn't a twig between them . I really wanted him to shoot a good one so I spent the first two and a half weeks just calling for him. Next year should be his year if he learned anything this year.
