SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Pilar just called. The Julie Rose III is on her way to cross the bar and sail into the history books. I expect one more update today before they go "over the horizon". Today's plan is to head toward 44.54.127
More later....

I wish them the greatest of luck and blessings!! I know they'll have calm seas this morning, as I was just on my way to work and saw what the ocean looked like and turned around!!
I'm taking Woody and his wife out for some bottom fishing this morning as they're down here on the coast. The winds are expected/forcast to pick up this afternoon, but the ocean is beautiful for this morning anyway.

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Update - they're at the Rockpile. Report is that there's "some swell" but otherwise it is a nice ocean. I expect they'll be out of cell range shortly and it will be satellite phone or nuttin' from here on out.
Forgot to mention earlier, the soundtrack from "the Perfect Storm" could be heard blaring from the Julie Rose III as she crossed the bar.
Here's wishing the swordboat captain and crew smooooth sailing! Now bring us back something with a bill on it, will ya!

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
This from Downriggin from PP returning from sea on the Carl Vincent. (I think) The time was 12:30 pm 18 September
Hey Gang,
About 85/90 miles off the Big C right now doing some last minutes drills.. Sea state is almost a 5, swell intervals are 7-10 seconds, winds at 20-25. Imagine the tuna bubbas are chumming!
Should hit the cape at 0400 and a drive by at CQ at 0600. Coming in slow..... Pierside at 1500- I am gunna kiss the dirt and have a cold one!
See you guys on the pond next week!

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
I can hardly concentrate on what I'm doing with the students. I keep peeking in at Ifish to see if there is any new news.
I "accidentally" added "swordfish" to our spelling list today.....numerous times!
Big Kahuna, my husband is out there with your brother! I know he(Skein) is in good hands and look forward to hearing the adventures. I especially look forward to their safe return.
Good luck to all of you on the east coast who are facing Isabelle. We hope you all safely survive this storm. Our thoughts are with you.

So it sounds like some last minute changes were made to the Crew Roster.
Who is onboard and what is the official float plan?

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
I just got in from taking Woody and his wife out for some fishing. Fishing was great. Catching sucked rocks. :depressed:
As for a brief update on the ocean. We were out about 13 miles straight out from Depoe Bay. Ocean was very nice, with a South wind, about 15. They should be having a great day on the water today I suspect. The wind is supposed to blow this afternoon, but so far hasn't been too bad. At least not inside of 15 miles.
I tried to hail them on the VHF without any success. If I'd have known what CB channel they might be monitoring, or if he had SSB, I mighta tried on there as well. Oh well.
My thoughts are with them all.

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Mr. F... the crew list is the same as before, with the exception of me. :depressed:
Pilar
Skein
Corrirod
And of course the Swordboat Captain, Popeye.
When I spoke with Popeye last night, he said they were planning on heading toward 44.54.127 and fishing from there. Depending on conditions that might be altered. I'm hoping to get an update tonight as to where they did end up and what the plan for the next couple of days is. I've had no news since they called from the Rockpile early this morning... except that around 1:30 I was feeling a little queasy. Maybe that was an update from Pilar

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
I spoke with Julie (Julie Rose namesake) and she had talked to Popeye. They were 75 miles out and encountering some wind and swells. The wind was starting to die down. Mike on the Blitz was not feeling well and had decided to turn for home. The crew on the Julie Rose were debating whether or not to spend the night.
Julie expects to hear from them in the morning. They did catch some decent Tuna.
I hope I got this right, Julie. Thanks so much for the call.

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Fishing is more fantasy than reality, even for the guys who catch fish. For some of us the fantasy is nearly 100%, only rarely interrupted by the actual pull of a fish on the line.
The build up all week, now the intrepid adventurers at sea, over the horizon. We can only imagine what it is like, which might almost be as good as being there. . .
Nah, I'd rather be there. But I'll just have to wait for the updates.
Great fantasy so far! Thanks.
By the Way, tomorrow is "National Talk Like A Pirate Day", so I expect we will hear reports with appropriate swashbuckling, pillaging, etc. Aarghh Mateys! Best o' Luck to the IFISH Swordsmen!

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Okay, here's the scoop as of 2200 last night.
Blitz had to return to port due to one illness on board (Doug has a vascular problem that requires surgery and wasn't doing well) and a PLUGGED BOAT! We had no room for any more tuna! The count was only about 40 fish but none were under 32 pounds! We had no place to put another fish!
The Julie Rose crew were also worn out from all the tuna wars and had stopped for the night to recover their energy and lick their wounds. Popeye deployed his flopper stoppers and hopefully all will be ready to continue the hunt after first light.
The seas had built a little offshore but they are expected to come down today and I'm sure the adventure will continue!
Charge on Popeye! Make us proud! You the man!
Captain Mike

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Pilar called this morning to report that they're about 65 miles out and heading west. No SWORDFISH! But they did get about 15 nice TUNA! some giant squids (3 ft  ) and some blue sharks. They report that there's about a 50% chance they'll stay out again tonight, but either way they'll be back in Newport tomorrow. Didn't get a chance to ask about the SSB channel :depressed:

ATC....32 pounds! Those are some nice fish. Did you get them further out than usual? Were there any distict temperature breaks. Why were they so big? Was it the distance out, or the time of year?

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
OB, I have plans for the early part of the day, but may head over in the evening depending on what the update from the Julie Rose is.
What are your plans?

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
8knots,
I don't know why the fish were so big. They were everywhere we fished so it has nothing to do with the location. I think they are just big this year and we got into them. I started canning about an hour ago and I was shocked. One fish (four fillets) filled 18 pint jars! I have six more to do! I'll be canning for the next two days! Oh well, such is the fate of those who tuna fish.
Blue Ocean, I don't know channel on the SSB Julie Rose is on. Doubt they would answer anyway, they's to busy fish'n!

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
DSD - I'm planning on heading out when they're about 3 hours from port.... whenever that is. I'll be standing by awaiting an ETA, then I'm a gonna split. I really, really want to be there when they dock.
Thanks ATC, and happy canning (Y'know, you might wanna think about getting a second canner/burner at that rate... and don't forget to smoke some, too. Firm back loins freeze great if'n ya use 'em within a few months.)

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Pilar just called again... they're 130 miles out and trolling slow for swords or whatever they might hook up on. Too lumpy to drift tonight. They'll head in tomorrow. ETA at Newport 20:00 hrs. (at the latest)
John sounds tired, but happy.
Word is that Rod snuck up to the bridge and popped in the "Perfect Storm" CD while they watched the sunset. It was apparently "a moment."
I'm headed to Newport tomorrow afternoon and hope to be there when they dock. Something about men returning from sea...
Those of you who dare hunt the bullets tomorrow can find them at the "61 degrees" mark. They were certainly there yesterday.
P.S. No SSB on board.

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Thanks for the update Jen. It's good to hear that all are safe and having a great trip. At least it sounds like a great trip so far. I hope they're able to hook into some good fun tonight, and maybe even something with a long pointy nose!

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Hopefully they'll hook up tonight. Last night seems they couldn't keep the giant squid off their gear. Hope tonight one of those squid turns into a broadbill... keep your fingers crossed!

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
DSD - t'was a coincidence... I was watching The Hunt for Red October last night... at the end, Sean Connery quoted it. It was just so perfect.
Anyone hear anything yet this morning?

Re: SWORDBOAT UNDERWAY!
Jen,
I talked with Julie this morning and she had not heard anything from them yet. She said Popeye would call to let her know when they were headed back in.
I will travel with her to Newport. See you there.
I can hardly wait!!
