sea sick medicine
OK I get sick the last few years it used to never bother me but for the last few years when I have gone out I have gotten sick. I have tried several things like eating a good breakfast before I went out, eating crackers, not eating, meklezine, drammamine nothing seems to work I have never tried patches I asked my doctor for a perscription and my wife went to Walmart pharmacy to get them and when she called me she said they were $22. for 3 patches That is a lot of money for something that may not work. What is your opinion, or suggestions. I love to fish in the ocean but getting sick is not fun.(does not stop me from going but not fun)

Re: sea sick medicine
Gary, being a puker for 35years I know a little about the subject. NO, I'm kidding, I only puke maybe the 1st trip of the year. I found if I stayed away from Red Wine the night before that's half the battle.
The patches DO work as long as you put them on the night before you sail, don't rub your eyes after while wearing them and remember, , wash your hands.

Re: sea sick medicine
The patches work great for me, a veteran puker. The ones I use are prescription Scopalamine. They are awesome, well worth the expense. Mine were $26 for 4, and they are reusable for up to three trips.

Re: sea sick medicine
I put up a prior post regarding this subject. I have a custom compounded drug prescribed for me. I call it an "Ocean Cocktail". Used by NASA crewmen.
Contains Scopalamine (as does the "patch), and dexadrine (amphetimine). You'll need a copy of the NASA letter and 25 page report for your doctor. But there is nothing better!

Re: sea sick medicine
The patch definitely works....It was a miracle worker for my son who used to always get sick. No matter the cost, they're worth it....Once you get sick, you'd pay $100 to have someone take you in, right? You won't regret getting them...put on the night before as someone mentioned.

Re: sea sick medicine
Hey KJ, send me that nasa paperwork, I got a couple close buddies that wont go in the ocean with me.
Maybe they're just using the seasickness as an excuse and they are really afraid of my little tub but I want to take that excuse away from em.

Re: sea sick medicine
Yes you are pretty much bullet-proof with the patch, but with unplesant side effects.
Dramamine doesn't do it for me.
I can usually get by using Bonine. The generic is Meclizine HCI.

Re: sea sick medicine
I Used to use Bonine but it would make me so drowsy I always had to pull over on the trip home and nap for 45 minutes. I went to Vancouver Island B.C. last June for Halibut/Salmon combo and discovered a wonderful motion sickness pill called GRAVOL that does not cause drowsiness. Better yet, The Peoples Pharmacy in both Tofino And Ucluelet sells a generic equivilent called "Travel Tabs". The active ingredient is Dimenhydrinate in 50mg. dosage. I take one the night before and one an hour before departure with no food.Call the Phamacy and see if they will ship you some at about 3 bucks a box of 24.

Re: sea sick medicine
Zippy,
Interesting. I have never experienced any drowsyness or other side effects from Bonine, but I guess everyone's different....
The old posts on this subject lend a lot of credence to the ingestion of ginger which I have been experimenting with.
When you love to fish in the ocean, but tend to get sick, this is a major concern.
BTW I was the netter (always the bridesmaid, never the bride)of a 45# king off Westport last Sunday....

Re: sea sick medicine
Promethazine and Ephedrine, mixed, is supposed to be the daddy seasickness cure. I haven't tried it yet since I need a Doctor's Rx for the Promethazine. Ephedrine is an over-the-counter decongestant. Promethazine is a prescription antihistamine. Take 25mg of each 2 hours before you go.
This concoction is recommended by the author who wrote the book "How to Catch Trophy Halibut".
Again, ask your Dr. before you start mixing any drugs, mmmmkay!

Re: sea sick medicine
nobody gets sicker quicker than me,,, but there's hope as i have beaten it more than once,,, i can't even ride in the back seat of a car for more than a few min. with out getting quezzy. two days before going out i start taking chewable meclinezine. i let it disolve in my mouth and its enters the blood stream by the vessuels under your togune. i may get a little sick at first but after a couple hours it fades... I'm in the process of getting a hold of a new compound "SCOPACE" and in studies its way out in front check out the web site www.scopace.com
my doc wrote a script but no one carries it yet.
you owe it to your self to check it out...
if it even comes close to meclinzene you can bet i will be booking a trip on the "BLACKROCKET" a true test.

Re: sea sick medicine
Bumper_Chrome,
As I understand it, Scopace is the same stuff as the patch, only in pill form. The advantage is faster medication - no 12 hours before going out, and you can regulate the dosage by weight of the specimen.
I understood that Costco Pharmacy carried the stuff.

Re: sea sick medicine
Just a little side note here.........
I used to gillnet and used the patch......Well after a summer of using it 2-3 times a week, my body actually got hooked on it (like a narcotic). I was getting 'sea sick' on dry land. My Dr. had to ween me off of it!! :depressed:
But it worked.. sometimes caused drowsiness tho.

Re: sea sick medicine
I had tried all the over the counter stuff and then even went to the doc and got the patch...I was beginning to wonder if anything would ever work. Well I got a prescription from my doc for a 2 pill cocktail. One pill is an upper and one is a downer and they are suppose to level you out, I was skeptical of course. So I gave them a try and lucky me no more seasick. The doc prescribed "ephedrine" and " promethazine". Anyway like I said they work for me.
