Hey Rod... I just got back in town and I am looking for the right day. Yesterday the warm water was going to wrong direction...but looks better today.

Count us in on Wednesday if the weather is OK....

I'm in, but think I may not have reverse on the boat! I think my control cable is streched out so far it won't pull into reverse. Anyone ever put one on an OMC Cobra outdrive?

Does anyone know where the warm is? Coastwatch and Terrafin are about two days behind.

Reverse? We don't need no stinking reverse! Wel... unless you hook a volkswagen or Mr. Bill that is!

Have you tried adjusting the cable. Should have a lock nut and an adjustment on the end.

I had my Cobra cable adjusted to the tune of 185 dollars...it is over 500 to replace. I think that can wait till I winterize.

I was having issues with the shift/stall ..switch. I could put it in gear but I had to pull pretty hard for nuetral and reverse.

I just checked the SST and it was a poor shot today...maybe they will get a better view later without clouds.....I think I will run the 270 degree toward the 61 spot. Looks like fishing water at 24 miles or so.

I have to get gas also, I'll be there at daylight.

MY GOD $500 BUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! I'm having the same problem, and have had the stall switch prob ever since I bought the boat, I have to put it in gear and then feather it untill the switch resets. I'm headed out now to send as long as it takes to get it fixed. See everyone in the A.M.

Greg,

I have replaced my shift cable (about $60 I believe) and ESA (electronic shift assist) to get mine shifting nicely. I have a web page I can post later, but the early gear problems that OMC had with the Cobra was determined to be caused by sticky shift cables and/or mal-adjusted cables. The new cables to fix the issue are red, and anybody with the old dark cables are in danger of chewing up their gear sets if they are having hard shifts.

We should talk, and I will post the web site later.

I have both gears working at this point, weeeeee. You want to talk about very touchy adjustments, jesus. One turn this way too much, half a turn the other too much again. I moved the cable mounting point on the lower pivot arm on the motor and this seemed to help alot, but the ESA ratchet adjustment is still a little wacky.

I like the sound of $60 alot better, look forward to the web page.

Looking forward to running around for tuna in the morning and chasing all those radio fish. I need to find a school that I can cast plastics too at least once this year.

Good luck all going out. I won't be heading out tomorrow for Tuna. (am in Portland). My gut feeling is that they're way out offshore. The SST's I've seen over the past several days have been not looking favorable. Personally I think the tuna season for recreational fishing is pretty well over this year. It could change, ya just never know, and I hope for all of ya'll that it is productive.

Will look forward to a report tomorrow evening. Just be safe out there.

Was hopefull that somehow I'd be able to get away and join you tomorrow, but work is unavoidable tomorrow. Even worse is that this looks like the only decent weather window for some time.

Good luck to ya scurvy dawgs.

Nancy! Report to the ER immediately and wash your mouth out with soap and a 10% bleach solution, for saying such a blasphemous thing! Although I have thought the same thing myself (possibility of an early winter), I'm hoping that there will be at least one nice stretch of flat calm fall weather before fat lady winter sings. I am in no-fish jail for a little while....Anniversary tomorrow, then Mom coming to visit for 5 days. I asked my wife, "what do you think of me going fishing for a day while my Mom is here?" and I got "the look"..... Next open day for me is 9/25. I hope they bite like wild pigs for y'all. My suspicious hot tip: Coos Bay / Port Orford. Good looking water down there. Last year, there was great warm water & a sharp edge off Blanco well into October. Looks like the same thing may be shaping up.

Greg,

The Info is here - OMC Shifting

Also, as Stuart notes, if you have upgraded to Electronic Ignition, you will need to make an electrical mod to keep the ESA working correctly.

Once you pull the outdrive, you may want/need to get a new drive-line bellows, and if your ESA is dead, you will need a new one of those. I looked up the following: cable - $70; bellows - $31; gaskets - $4; ESA - $70. Either boatfix.com or ebasicpower.com. Couldn't find the ESA on their sites, but found it at surplusunlimited.com.

I have the service manual, and could send you some info for the service. Pulling the drive is easy, but you need a large allen wrench to pull the pivot housing. The cable is pretty easy to replace, but a little difficult to unscrew from the pivot housing. And, as long as the drive is off, you will want to align the drive to the engine, and I have the alignment tool for this.

Mark,
That look you were getting from your wife as you suggested a fishing trip during your mom's visit...I like to call that the "stink eye". Been there, done that.

As I surf the this morning's long range forecast models, we should remain in a summer type weather pattern for the at least the next couple of weeks. Last week, I watched tuna water move about 30 miles to the inside over a two day period off Brookings and Trinidad. Unfortunately, the ocean was too lumpy for my liking and that water has moved back offshore. It will only take a couple of days of favorable offshore weather to put this water back in reach.

I'm with you and am optimistic we will get another shot at tuna. I think you are right, we will need to look from Coos Bay south. Let's keep our fingers crossed. Cheers...Bob

You may certainly be correct Mark. I hope that you're right on and that we get another nice stretch with warm water within reasonable reach. I think we got spoiled this summer.

I hope that those who went out this morning are making a tuna killing and come back loaded down.
