Any Sauvies Island ice reports?
Just wondering what the ice was like today on the public area, especially the west side units. In addition, how was today's (Tues. 12/16) shooting?

THICK! 2+ inches on hunt lake this morning. VERY slow, like no shooting, and REALLY cold.

Re: Any Sauvies Island ice reports?
Hunted Mud lake yesterday morning. Ice was nearly 2" thick. We killed half the birds on the west side with a a big 3. When we checked out about 2 we doubled the birds for the day so far....so yes 6 birds killed on the entire west side yesterday. I probably didn't hear 15 shots ALL DAY and saw less than 10 ducks fly. Unbelievable.

ouch! That's horrible!! looks like we are going to have to drive other places to kill birds.
The ice just isn't doing it for SI.

Re: Any Sauvies Island ice reports?
did you guys break the 2" ice cuz i found it rather difficult to do any amount of area over 1", if you did how did you do it, or did you guys hunt directly on ice, or was there a pocket of open water

Re: Any Sauvies Island ice reports?
Hey!
Right now the Ducks don't give a rip about some little open hole in a puddle (when they've got the river/s and big lake holes open to go sit down on )
What they want is high carbo food...they're looking at CORN!
Go put your self-standing or staked field dekes (or shells) out on the edge of Cornfields and get into the Corn and hunker down...then CALL!
Geez, what's all this concern about how to chop holes in Ice?!!
Whenever I've chopped holes in ice, any Ducks that came around and landed (that I wouldn't shoot like "extra" Sprig or Spoonies), swam around in the water then jumped up ON the Ice and stood around, watching my dekes freeze in!
You guys chop ice over there...I'll shoot Ducks over here!

Do you have luck with birds flying straight into corn of water nearby?

Well, obviously, they'll go to the CLOSEST "Easy" feed they can find.
But, after that gets fed out, they'll go farther.
It's no big deal if they have to fly 45 min-> 1 hr. to feed, but if they can go a few miles (or a few hundred yards) they like that better!
It's amazing what makes them tick ...I mean you can watch them fly further over lush cornfields and pick ONE certain place to go down and feed in.
The next day it might be a different place, closer or further away.

So where's the meeting spot in the morning to hunt all of this corn?
Let's get a bunch of these guys together and bust some damn ducks!

Ya know, that's been a topic ppl. on here have been discussing for a couple of weeks now.
IMHO there AREN'T "Many" Ducks out on the island!
That's the Bad News.
The Good News is, the one's that still ARE there will be heading for that Corn.
(and there's LOTS of that out on the Island too, both on public and private land)
Other "news" is that I've noticed that the lower cobs were all cleaned out early by the Geese this year!
