Default I need a volunteer

Logistics is a challenge for Jen and I this week. Popeye has called the trip for Wed, Thur, Fri. We can do that but have some other obligations on Tuesday night. I cannot ask Jen to break them since it involves the pursuit of her dreams to learn to dive. The boat leaves at first light Wednesday morning.

So She should go to the dive class. After that we would drive to Newport. I would gladly drive but the gimp leg has made that impossible with manual transmission cars. She will not be in any condition to drive after 4 hours in the pool with Kujo.

Is there anyone who is willing to ferry us to Newport, late on Tuesday night? We can find a ride back but Tuesday night is gonna be a real pinch.

The plan is to meet me, Pilar in Aloha to load our gear and then pick up Jen at her dive class in East Moreland at 10 pm. Or perhaps she should drive her car back home and we would depart from Aloha. Then we would head to the beach.

Call or Email (503) 348 0767 or (503) 348 2337 Pilar@ipinc.net or JJmostsweet@comcast.net

John,
If you get in a pinch, lemme know...I don't mind an all-nighter, but need to be in the office Wednesday by mid-morning...I'll get you down there. Midnight is the only time I would ever consider driving through Lincoln City anyway...

Bill, gosh, I'd be honored, several folks have volunteered and I have email and voice mail to answer. Let me talk to my mate, she is in stress mode and we have a few details to work out.

John....I haven't heard from Mike yet, so things are still up in the air. It's much harder to pull these things off with all that's involved than I had thought! The forecast has also changed since 3:30 yesterday, but I still feel it's doable.
On a second note...The float plan is obviously going to have to be tentative. If Blue kicks up on us, it will be back to port. The forecasted swell direction would lend well to that if neccesary.
I will be very vigilent today keeping you posted, and then I'll be heading for the boat, if it's a go with Mike.

John, Keep me posted. I'll take the night off if I have to to get you there. Bill, you are a saint. Know what you are in for before committing. I'm not sure where Moreland is  .

Bruce, can you arrange a ferry at the dock so that John won't have to hobble down the dock? Like we did for your friend that one day...

I sure would like to see you guys off...

Arrggghhh...

I have a wheelchair we can use to get him to the boat. I'll dust if off and bring it along.

Thank you Jim. Should I wear a pfd just incase of a water landing? JK

Jen and I will drive down in the morning Wednesday and we'll be ready for a departure as early as noon. If she can get me out of or past the OTIS cafe, that is. Hey sweetie, we are going to OTIS cafe for breakfast, yes?

It looks more and more like a Wednesday afternoon or evening departure. Popeye is polishing the cannonball and using the Nobeltec tools he has to refine the NWS predictions. He predicts some weather in the early part of Wednesday, laying down as the day goes on and fair, not perfect conditions through late Friday. We will return with the prevailing winds and waves before the conditions worsen Friday evening and certainly before the big blow on Saturday.

It's just a guess based on what we know and can learn with the available resources. We may limit the scope of the trip to increase our safety factor. IE: hit one seamount (#1 north) and reserve the other one for a greatly improved forecast or another day.

I brought up the possibility of a midday departure and Popeye agreed to consider it. The idea is to troll for swords using the methods and gear that have been very successful elsewhere, recently, once we hit the 60 mile point (the edge of the continental shelf) and approach the #1 seamount farther offshore before dawn Thursday. This will all make sense on Wednesday when we look at the conditions not the predictions.

I have every confidence in our Captain and his experience on the waters 50 miles or more off our coast.

One thing is certain. The Jetstream has begun to strengthen and move south much earlier than normal. This has brought the October west swell almost a month early. In past years the swell has persisted once established. What will happen this year?

Wait and see, I guess. I think this is our last weather window this year.

Sunny, some of my unhappiest moments come right after I do that to my mate. Hope you get out of the canine residence soon.

She really, really hates it when I do not check in with her or I obligate her to something before I ask her about it.

Who wouldn't dislike being committed without prior knowledge or consent?

Based on pure logistics & the comfort of having a running-mate, a later Wed departure sure works better.

Thanks to everyone for the offer of help! It's wonderful to have such a large "family!"

John, sounds like you have your ride all figured out. If something comes up and you need a ride or whatever during the week give me a call (541-926-6490). I do not work Tu,Wed or Thur.

Pilar, Bill;
I have commited one of the cardinal sins. I volunteered before checking with my spouse. I was informed that our guests from Minnesota will be arriving Tuesday AM instead of Thursday as planned. I am truly sorry if this caused any unnecessary confusion. Any other time you need a hand, let me know and I'll be there for you. Sorry again for going off half cocked.
