With the nasty weather in the forecast, holiday parties, and prep for an upcoming baby it's looking like I may not make it out another day in 08 so I decided to make a quick video of the year in review.
Overall, I would have to rate my 2008 trout season below average. I didn't get to fish the D as much as I usually do because of the high water in April and May. I finally hit it in earnest in late May and early June and I did have one weekend during the salmonfly hatch where I hooked several piggies including a 20-1/2 fish caught on a sparkle pupae fished on the surface. Unfortunately I didn't get a pic of the beauty as I was by myself .....but I did get a measurement on my rod and he just exceeded my 20 inch marker. After fishing the Deschutes for 10 years it was about time I finally broke the 20 barrier!
My annual Yellowstone trip was slightly below average as well. We had to postpone the trip until late July due to high water but were rewarded with some good numbers and some decent hatches. The only caveat was the fish were a little smaller than most years and I didn't land anything approaching 20 inches.
My 2008 Steelhead season was slightly above average.....probably due to the fact that I made a concious effort to get out a little more than normal knowing this was my last season before parenthood. I stuck to swinging the entire season and did pretty decent numbers-wise, with all but a few coming on dry lines. However I didn't land anything much over 30 inches. This was somewhat surprising as it seemed that most of the fish I landed were thick bodies and robust, but I couldn't seem to break the 30 inch barrier this year.
Here's a quick sampling of the season......the first half is all trout the second is all steelhead so that the steelhead bums can fast forward (you know who you are)
Tight lines and bent rods for 2009!
