Default lesson learned!

Well,
I finally learned about them sandyu bars on the Columbia! Ran outside a hogline to avoid wake wash for them, on Thursday. Found a sand/mud bar that comes up from 60' to inches in a flash. The prop is toast and the trip prematurely ended but a lesson was learned! Just ordered the stainless prop I was wanting anyway (nice rationalization)! I hope to get the boat in Monday to be cleaned out and checked out. With luck I will not miss all the rest of the Fall fisheries. Caution...caution...caution. A moment of distraction equals a lot of money and problems!

Ack! Sorry to hear of the prop damage WP. I've been that route this year as well, though for a different cause, same end result.

Good luck getting all back up and going with minimal down time.

I run a composite prop, it's cheaper and will snap off easily, thus saving a lower unit possibly.

I learned that lesson on the Siuslaw River in about 1986.
Headed upriver early, caught our limit of pigs quick, then headed downstream at the beginning if incoming. Cruised for a ways, then saw a boat fishing ahead. I could have slowed down, but opted to go around on step--sure was a big BOOM when I lost the shoe on my sled...
Sorry to hear about it WP--but I know nothing short of a stroke could keep you away from the fish!!!!
Good Luck--and I KNOW you'll like the stainless prop. Much more durable too

Rode through the gorge today and couldn't believe the amount of sandbars I could see in the CR. Better have good chartplotter and watch the channel like a hawk or others will run aground like you did WP.

Hope the damage is minimal, glad there were no injuries.

David, A prop is a lot cheaper than a lower unit. Think about one of the new carbon fiber props over a stainless one. I used to be a stainless prop fan too but I learned my lesson the hard way...
Don't follow in that boat wake. When the poo hits the screw the weakest link is gonna go. I think the prop is the cheapest link to replace. With one of the new props out there you could get off even cheaper by only replacing the sections or blades that are damaged.
Give it some thought at least...

Really sorry to hear about your prop Dave. I hope you did it after you guys limited out! If you need any help give me a call. The San Diego trip got cancelled, but I decided to still take the time off from work. I think I am suffering from terminal burn out. Oh well maybe when the rains come and the ocean turns to sheep I will be able to keep my mind on work - NOT!

Make sure the engine is flushed out real well. If you got in the sand far enough to take the prop off you may have sucked sand/mud into the cooling jackets. I've never heard of an outboard doing it but I know a few people who have cooked their stern drive engines from having the manifolds plug up from this. :depressed:
