Default The season in Pictures

Well the deer season here on Vancouver Island is finally over....and now we get the snow and cold weather that was needed in November to get the deer moving....go figure

The season started on Sept 06 with hot, sunny and clear days and nights. Seen a two point, spike, a big buck and 6 does opening morning.

A couple of weeks later, I found this guy bedded along the timberline. Scores 90", for an Island deer this is a better than avg deer. But who really cares...

For the next month, I stayed home and did the "list".
I went out for a morning hunt and found this great berry bear feeding on blueberries. Now we have sausage, pepperoni and roasts as well the burger, steaks and roasts from the deer.

I hunted hard for the month of November, but without the snow and cold weather, the deer were scattered from mountain top to valley bottom. I turned down a few smaller bucks as we did not need the meat, but I could not find one to hang my second tag on. I did an interior mulie hunt in late November (4x4 or better bucks only), missed one, saw another shooter and had a great time.

Finished off the season with my young pup, teacher here the rules around hunting deer with dad

Some of the scenery and country I hunt in

All in all it was a great season. Highlights were learning some new areas. being successful on the deer and bear and the best....my wife getting involved with the cutting, wrapping and sausage making of both the deer and bear. She was amazing!!!!

Cheers and happy holidays

Those care cool pictures - it would be a fun place to chase deer.

Good buck and neat looking country, thanks for sharing!

Looks like they mostly log Hemlock up high, any red cedar in the bottoms?

Yea there is lots of elk, they are all on Limited Entry draw system. The odds are around 70:1, Oct 10th to Nov 20th. I recieved my first one last year, it only took 26 years. Shot a good 5x4 bull. We do have some real crankers here, 350-370 bulls are around, but with the draw, a lot of bulls die of old age here.

The timber is Hemlock/Balsam (HemBal) with lots of red and yellow cedar (Cypress) mixed in. Some good spruce on the west coast and lots of good fir a little further south.. Hunting the big timber is like walking into a park, until you get to the North facing, then it gets thick.

Thanks for the kind comments. BT deer are the most challenging of the three here in BC, mainly because of the country they live in, steep, thick and wet.

Cheers
