Elk= Wenaha archery
Deer= Eastern oregon rifle buck
Antelope= Buy a point saver(will give me 3 points)

Antlerless deer= wilson unit
I will also buy a regular season fall bear tag and cougar tag.
MY WIFE:

Oh then also applying out of state for montana for deer and possibly elk also. should be a busy year next season and a fun one.

Re: Next years archery hunts
How does a person go about picking a good unit to apply for? I know to look at how many applied vs how many tags. Any other info could be helpful. Never hunt lope before. I have to do it with a bow though.

Re: Next years archery hunts
i pretty much look at tag numbers and how many guys put in for those tags, that kind of gives you a fill if its a good hunt or not. In my opinion for mule deer hunting there really isnt a unit that stands out anymore, but elk there are a few. You may if get some unfo word of mouth on particular units that are good.

Re: Next years archery hunts
so if there are not many people applying for a certain hunt, then the unit isnt all that good?

not true.. could be that the hunt is limited to access to the hunt area. could be that the deer/elk numbers are low in the unit.. it doens't mean there are no game in the unit it just means you have to do more homework.. scout more. sometimes less is better if you don't like hunting with thousands of your best friends...

Re: Next years archery hunts
Gary Miller and I have enough points to draw Hart Mt. archery antelope tags. We'll watch the winter and spring conditions and draw if it all looks good!

There is that, but barring these issues I will plrobably be applying for a rifle elk tag with 6 pts. I know not where, still researching. Im done with heppner, considering Murderers Creek, or maybe Ochoco bull tags for a change of scenery.
Deer, Metolius pt. saver, after the pics showing up on the net it will probably be easier to draw that than East Hebo. Long ways to go on that though, 0% chance of drawing for a few years yet.
Pt. savers on the rest, Ill probably buy a bear and cougar tag.
My son will probably be hunting this year. Might put him in for a Paulina or metolius buck tag, maybe the ochoco youth cow hunt. If anyone knows good youth hunts for a kid Id appriciate any input, those are uncharted territory for me.

Mckenzie (Hair tag) late hunt, occurs during the rut. Rogue unit (Hair tag), 2 weeks long and with a bonus cow hunt at the same time if you draw them both. It's over the holiday break so the kids are out of school already. Both are good hunts, especially if you get some snow.
Intestate youth is the best one out there (for youth only), but 2009 will be the last time it is offered as a youth tag. I believe it's about 6 pts to draw.
Good luck

Re: Next years archery hunts
Elk - 0 points so it will be a Wenaha Point Saver and a OTC archery tag
Buck - 3 points and am leaning towards a rifle hunt in the Silvies, Desolation or Heppner unit. I hope I don't draw so I can get my OTC archery tag.
Doe - 2 points and will be Saddle Mt. or Wilson... Yes I like a challenge!
Antelope - 4 points and will be a Silvies Point Saver
