Would like to take my first ocean trip.
I have never been across a bar or out in the ocean. So I don't know if I get sick or even would like an ocean trip.
I hate to pay a professional guide to take me, because I am not sure I would learn anything.
I have a boat currently that I could learn to take across the bar to chase Salmon, but I don't want to move my boat to Astoria until I feel comfortable know when to and not to, cross bars.
If I am going to get sick and not like the ocean, then I don't want to take the time and expense to move the Rarin' to the ocean. (Little rhyme there for ya )
Anyway, my point is I would like to take an exploritory trip. If someone out there with a boat has an open seat, I will pay for bait, lunch and whatever else these trips require.
Also, I would offer an trip on the Rarin' in St. Helens for some URBs, if you are interested.
Just thought I would throw this out there and see what happens.
Chacal.

Re: Would like to take my first ocean trip.
Chacal, give us some specifics on your boat, boating experience and so on. Hitting the ocean, crossing the bar for the first time is an interesting experience. You will need to sand your finger prints off the steering wheel after you come back.
I cut my teeth on the Columbia Bar. In retro-spect I think I would have gone to Newport to learn a little first before tackling the columbia. Tillamook is not a great place to learn either. Coasties shut her down all to often. Pick your days and don't be afraid to call it off if conditions are not just right for your first time.
Once on the bar there is not time to turn around. You are committed on all be the calmest days. Search for threads on Bar crossings and you will gain a lot of sage advice. Once you learn what you are doing it can be a blast. Just be respectful of Neptune.

Re: Would like to take my first ocean trip.
What I was looking for was a ride on someone else's boat. I am not sure how much a trip like that costs or I would offer to pay for all gas in addition to bait and lunch.
I do have moorage to pay...
I would pay for part gas or all gas depending on how much it is. Frankly, I have no clue.
I have a 22.5 foot sea ray that I have been playing with for about a year on the Columbia. It mechanically is rebuilt and I am very confident in it mechanics. I do have a GPS, VHS, CB and currently my dad is working on the kicker. I think it has a 60 gallon gas tank. The V8 (350 Chevy) has been rebuilt, so powerplant wise I don't have concerns, but getting the kicker in shape just the same.
So, I could see myself moving the boat for part of the year to the coast somewhere. I live in Canby, so the moorage would have to be mid-coast for my beast.
I just would like to have the experience and watch someone else navigate the bar and teach me the ropes. Otherwise I will probably keep the boat in St. Helens and drought half the year...

You might consider a charter for a salmon trip to
see how you like it the ocean. It will give you an opportunity to see how you like going out and how you fare with the seasickness. Their samlmon trips out of the CR at this time of year are usually back by 11:30. I think they cost around $75.

Fallow the red line if you go out over the columbia. Do not cut to the right of it when you come in, just look left going out and you will see why. Also check this site out before you go. http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/ It will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. If the wind waves and swells add up to or over the perdicted time between dont go, good rule to fallow. Also within reason. Good luck! Also I will keep you in mind if I go again anytime soon.

Chacal, send me an email with your phone number. I typically fish out on the ocean a couple times a month. I'd be happy to take you out with us. We usually fish out of Tillimook bay. Kasey

Re: Would like to take my first ocean trip.
Chacal, you're on the right path, go out on Big Blue with someone else before learning on your own boat, either a charter or another PC. See what its like before you're at the helm. Take dramamine if you're concerned about getting sea sick, I think alot of it is just in your mind. I'd suggest Newport too.
I go fishing more weekends than not and would be happy to take you out sometime, but doubt I'll be going for another two weeks or so. I've got a 24' Sea Ray cuddy cabin, probably very similar handling as yours. It may also give you some ideas on how to outfit yours.
Send me an email with phone number and we can talk more if you like.

Re: Would like to take my first ocean trip.
Chacal, if your trailer is ok go to Newport for your first trip in your boat. Contrary to common practice or popular belief B-10 and the mouth of the Columbia is not for beginners. Newport is the small boat friendly place to go. Easy fishing close in and the easiest bar. Add to that the numerous trips there by guys from here and you can't go wrong.
Before you do that in your boat go out on one of the boats that are offered you. That way you have no worries other than discovering if the ocean is for you or not.
One last thing, seasick is for most people a mental thing. Not to belittle the seasick but attitude is everything. If you believe you will get sick, you will. If you are sick and you think you are going to die, you will feel like you are going to die. Funny thing about seasick is that as soon as you hit the dock you are all better. Remember that while you are out there and it is easier.
Good luck, Chacal, get some sleep and avoid alcohol poisoning before your trip. Drink water and watch the other boats near the horizon. Avoid looking down at the floor of the boat lor your hands and avoid lying down. When it gets at you, take deep breaths and count the guys on the other boats. You can get used to the variable gravity, I am living proof. You can feel seasick and overcome it by watching the horizon and deep breathing.
May your curiosity and perseverance be rewarded with the treasures of the sea. If it works for you then you will be handed the keys to a very awesome place. A magic kingdom that will fascinate and pull at you for the rest of your life.

Re: Would like to take my first ocean trip.
The sea sick thing for me is a real unknown.
My dad, Clown Mouth, doesn't get sick, and the other day when we were at the jaws of the Nehalem in some pretty good chop, I felt nothing. Of course I am a spazz and can barely stand up, but otherwise, I think everything is ok.
I will most likely want to take a weekend trip and it will have to wait for a couple of weeks. My wife went "window shopping" and bought a full living room set, bedroom set and entertainment center, so the funds for the rest of this month are tied up in furniture!
Thanks again for all the offers and also the great advice. I will look into moorage options in Newport after I take a trip or two and see what is what.
Also, I would really like to thank Pilar. Dude, you helped me figure out anchoring when I first logged on to this board a year or so ago, and your advice has made it almost second nature for anchoring. You give good solid advice, and when I read a post by you, I print it out and take it to heart.
Anyway, thanks to all. I will be in contact with those who offered! Wow...

Chacal, it is very nice to know that I was able to help you. Thank you for your kind words. Later after your saltwater addiction becomes unmanageable you may change your mind about what 'Help' is.
If you have it in you to fish the big blue you will be called to it. Inevitable is the word. May as well find out now and enjoy your inheritance while you are still a young man.
