Re: Any herring in Newport?
Pretty quiet, eh?
I'm going over tomorrow to take the boat over for Saturday's rodeo, and since I need herring too, I'll be out by the green can. You might recognize the boat.
If you want to, join me. That goes for anyone else as well. I'll be over around 9am to try and catch the incoming. Hope there's some bait swimming around.

Re: Any herring in Newport?
Skein - I wouldn't mind heading out for some herring with ya if ya have an open seat. I am pretty much done for the year but would like to get a few put up for an occasional bottom fishing trip out this winter and next spring. It's pretty costly on fuel for me to take the Sea Jypzee down there for herring only.
Not sure what day you're gonna be jigging. I'm available the weekend, but not tomorrow.

Re: Any herring in Newport?
Jim, They've been there on every incoming tide this summer. Look for the guy all by himself in the 13 ft smokercraft. He shows up about an hour before high slack, pretty much every day. Watch for a few minutes and learn all you ever wanted to know about herring.
He jigs a few dozen and then fishes for lings along the jetties with live bait.
The other place is by the OSU dock out in the middle by the white can. You'll see a slick there and a bait ball on the sonar when you drive over them.
Good luck and have fun with your new boat.
PS: use a small silver spinner blade or FST lure, no hook, snap ringed to your top swivel and use two herring jig sets on the same line. I learned these tricks from 'Herring man'. Also don't be surprised if you get sardines. I caught 20 or so big ones under the bridge a couple of weeks ago.

Re: Any herring in Newport?
Nancy, tomorrow (Friday) looks to be the only "bait" day. How 'bout I bring you some up if I get enough.
Thanks for the tips, John. Never thought about hooking to rigs together. Double your fun, eh?

Re: Any herring in Newport?
FishingDispatcher,
Sounds like a good haul. When and where were you getting them?
