Re: I just learned what Kata means .
Dog salmon are much under rated
Id,
I shot my first brown bear at the mouth of the Keta River in SE Alaska, I held the IGFA 12lb test world record (19lbs) chum for many years, and I've caught 100's of bright chum in the ocean. They fight every bit as hard as a chinook. It's only natural that I use "Keta" for my name. Are you out of canned fish yet?
I hope you do better next year :depressed:

Re: I just learned what Kata means .
Thanks for the input. I was reading an article about fishing for Chum in the ocean. The article mentioned the fishes fighting abilities as awsome.
No Im not out of the "gold" yet.Im trying to make it last me for awhile. My entire family likes it soo much, that i had to put a limit on the opening of jars. My son likes it from the jar, my wife loves it in a toasted sandy and my daughter will eat a plate full with nothing but a little Mayo. Great stuff. Thanks Much. Next summer, next summer , it will be my turn to catch one. id. painter

Keta,
How about the fight of the mighty Lingcod as it looses it torso to the Pacific Blue Shark, or the proud Widow Rockfish as it struggles to remain hooked from a debth of 400' +. I think that's the date.

Keta,
That is really cool about the IGFA record.
What is the best way to catch Chum's in the salt? Are you doing this right before they move into fresh water?

Yeh. You don't think I'd let Mel invite ya first.
How many Fish do ya think it will take to fill the Full tote? That would be a good idea for a contest, might be a way to offer a ride on the next trip south for the winning guesser.

Re: I just learned what Kata means .
Nit-picking: but I think the "keta" is actually Russian. Most of the pacific salmon names are. The Oncorhynchus part is latin, but the species names are usually russian, tshawytsha (sp.), kisutch, nerka, etc.

Re: I just learned what Kata means .
Birdnest. The article talked about these salmon as plankton eaters and as they move closer to the spawning beds they will eat Herring .
They school up, so they suggest not even wetting a line until you see jumpers . The article said that the main reason this fish is so underrated is because not many people know how to catch um..
But we got Keta!!!! id. painter

Re: I just learned what Kata means .
Chums will hit whole herring trolled abut 24" behind a 00 dodger a bit faster than chinook speed but not as fast as for coho. Keep the roll speed down too, none is best. These fish were within 10 miles of their spawning streams.
Mel,
Need a hand with the exhaust? I'll be down tommorrw earlier than I thought due to an asbestos problem. Fish kabobs are started and I made a batch of refridgerator pickles. The pickled tuna is still two weeks short of being done.
Kamloops,
Make Miss B go for a ride with us on your boat. If we get some big buts we should be able to fill the tote with three or four fish.

Re: I just learned what Kata means .
I would love to have Mel take a ride south with us.
That way I can watch the Football games while Mel reels up from 400'. Come to think of it, I remember watching the Ducks last year blow a 4 touchdown lead to ASU, there was pretty good TV
reception down there on the Miss. B.
Who gets the Electric reel?

Re: I just learned what Kata means .
Kamloops- you're either going to have to take 25 people on that trip or catch a lot of 100lb bottom fish if you want to fill that tote.
I see you stole Keta again. I'm gunna have to get a chain and padlock for him. He'll be a kept man!
If my exhaust system gets put in I'm still go. I'd like to explore the humps out there we haven't been on yet.

Re: I just learned what Kata means .
Hmmm.... I might just do that. Leave the driving to you! How many crew you got going Tom? I owe a trip to a couple guys at work so might take Miss B if they can go.
Since I don't have any butt gear on board it might be the right thing to do (go with you). Unlike some weenies I know I don't mind reeling up 48 oz's from 500 feet (once anyway), as long as there's a 100 lb butt on the end.
Lee- exhaust is being installed by the guy building it. I already did the prep work (stripped out all the old stuff). I'm calling this am to see if he's making any progress.

I havn't thought of any crew yet other than you guys, maybe Kent (Reel In). I could have room for your guys at work. I sure as heck owe you a trip or two. How about a end of summer fun trip?
Keta is jazzed about the Halibuts.
I'm thinking of throwing the jigs out on our way back North through the Canyon.
Remember the BI-Catch need to be caught on Barbless hooks.
Need to get some small Salmon heads or Bellies.
Buds Campgrounds Store has frozen Mackerel. Are you down this weekend? At the boat I mean.

No problem getting Pilchards (Pacific Sardines) in Astoria. Almost all the fish plants are doing them these days. Last time I asked I got about 10 lbs for free.

I would be happy to have you go along. We need to keep an eye on the weather.
Don't know if the Miss B. is going to make the
trip, I hope Mel will ride along with us.
So right now we have three with me and you and Keta, if Mel comes with his 2 employees than we might call it full or we might need crew on the Miss B. if he gets his pipes welded up.

Re: I just learned what Kata means .
Just got my latest Nat. Geo and there's a little article about Jellyfish and a new species that was discovered recently. It also discusses how Jellies are considered a nuisance by fisherman and beach goers.
There is however a little side-bar that covers the good qualities of the jellies. They only managed to come up with two. First, human consumption in certain parts of the world and second, the fact that Chum Salmon live on them!
Therefore- Keta is NOT a plankton eater (like the great whales), but a Jellyfish eater like the Sunfish! No wonder he's gray!
