Short knife or screwdriver works for me. With the knife I can then cut the vein under the gill arch to bleed. Heart beats for many minutes.

Thanks you guy's,
I will bring a short knife and a #2 screwdriver.I like the knife idea where you can slit the vein at the gill plate. OOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo. I Can Almost Taste It!!
Don't worry Bruce Deeno will be busy eating zuccini bread. I won't reveal my secrets.
Keta ,
I bought one of those Frost Knives/Plastic Sheath with the serrated edge about 3/4 the way up the blade at Englands. Will that be a good tool for the porpoise? I mean Tuna? Thanks again. Tom

Default Best Method for Tuna Quick Kill

I was reading last year on the best ways to kill the albacore after it is in the boat. I searched the archives and could not find it. Pilar ?Keta? any one else with the best way to do this? Thanks for any advice. Tom

Brain Spike....Insert a sharpened screw driver into the "soft spot" at a 30 deg angle from horizontal, pointing it back. HANG ON TO THE TAIL when you do this!

Thanks Bruce,
I thought it was. I am gong to be down Friday to go out on the Blitz sat. (Weather permitting).I was trying to explain it to Capt. Mike's deck hands last week-end. Now I have something to show them. You just earned yourself a Good Cigar. I'll see you there Friday evening if Mike is going out on sat. Tight lines , Tom

Keta was using a plain ole #2 phillips Screwdiver last Saturday. It works great and is not sharp enough to cause damage (well not much anway) if you get "stuck" on a rolling boat.

Well Tom, now he's dead and blead, what next?
In my opinion Ketas's technique reigns supreme.

Make sure the fish has bled out before proceeding but don't wait too long.
Make an incision about 3 inches long starting at the anal vent, insert your finger and tear out the intestine. It is about the size of a pencil and will kind of curl out the incision when you do this right. Next cut along the gill membrane and cut the gill rakes from the head. Turn the Tuna over and repeat on this side. Grab the gills and pull forward towards the mouth. The entire gut package will pop out and you can discard it overboard. Sometimes you will be able to hold the tuna's heart in your hand while it is still beating... Cool... Next use your finger and rake the inside of the body cavity to remove the kidneys. Do this on both sides. You will feel a slot on both sides when you do this right. Now rinse the fish inside and out and put it in a saltwater and ice slurry (50/50) to cool off the meat. Next put a few fist fulls of ice into the body cavity and ice it down in a cooler with a few dozen of his closest friends. Walla, the finest grade Tuna you will ever have the pleasure to put on your table.

Thanks Keta for showing me the ropes...
Here's to blood in yer eye...

Tom, you're welcome. I just wish I could show you how it's done in person.
I hope you still want to fish on Sea Lion when I get her back in shape. This down time is killin' me...

Good luck getting out Saturday. The forecast doesn't look good but you are in good hands and I'm sure The Blitz will get you into fish if it is safely possible.

Tight lines and Chineese fire drill dreams...

Note: Always wear either rubber boots and bib type raingear pants or old clothes destined only for "TUNA Gear box". If your a newbie and don't get the idea of this then stop by the grocery store on the way and by some laundry spot remover and industrial soap for washing machines, you'll need it.

Hummingbird,
That's the knife I use and have attached to the suspenders of my rain pants.

The kidney on an albacore is on both sides of the body just behind the gill arch.
