Swordfish Trip....Revisited
FYI....Some of you already know of the postponement because of weather, however, there are some other changes because of it. My son Skip, will not be able to go because of prior commitments (Elk Camp ) and Randy has the same (problem?) Soooo.... I have invited Skein & Keta. Skein said that he really didn't want to go, but for the sake of the trip he would do it. Keta just e-mailed me that it may not be possible for him, do to work, but I've decided to wait a few days until he's sure. I'll keep everyone posted

:depressed: Work IS a four letter word :depressed:
I let you know if things change ASAP. I'll have to take a few weeks off to winterize the place in KF at the end of Sept. and first of Oct. Deer hunting too.

Re: Swordfish Trip....Revisited
Bruce, If you need an additional deck hand, I am available. I don't have a job that interferes with my fishing. Like Skein, I am retired. I know you probably have all kinds of people on the waiting list, just put me on the list. Thanks.

Re: Swordfish Trip....Revisited
Not if you stay in port
I'm a fond believer that when I plan a trip to Newport I'll cross one bar or the other... Look to the Rouge my friend and your thirst shall be quenched... And your hunger can be fed too.... Nothing like a Bacon Blue cheese burger and a cup of chowder to take the edge off and get you thinking about the next trip while you watch beat up boats return to port and sip on a Mocha Porter
If I were closer I'd meet you there...
After all, I at least owe you one for the lucky hat. I'm the envy of "C" Dock

Re: Swordfish Trip....Revisited
What is this storm going to do to the tuna season? Is it bringing in cold water and washing the albacore herds back out to sea? Will it do the same thing to the swords?
My sweet little wife is getting worried about going into winter without tuna loins in the freezer and Charley in a jar. Besides, I've got this neat new boat and these brand-new Zuckers....

Jim....It's my guess, that where we're goin', Albacore will be the by-catch. we'll proly have to quit fishin' for 'em after a while, and just concentrate on the other "stuff"

No, Ray, I want to go fishing. Need to go fishing. Have to go fishing!
I was not just thinking of the sword trip, Popeye, I was thinking about the season in general. I thought the sword trip was going to be a sortie focused on, you know, swords.
If the seas don't settle down in time, tell Skip I'd be glad to cover him on his elk hunt as well.

skein asks:
"What is this storm going to do to the tuna season? Is it bringing in cold water
and washing the albacore herds back out to sea?"
Rest assured, my friend, that this is NOT the case! Typically the SW
wind will bring the warm water ever closer to shore (in my limited
experience of about 12-14 years of near-shore TUNA! fishing). Hopefully
this weekend ... say about Saturday ... the TUNA! should be within about
20 miles of Depoe Bay!
Just about time to get your boat out there to join mine in the carnage!

Re: Swordfish Trip....Revisited
Skein, like **the other Mark** says, this kind of weather system is assisting the warm current from the south to push in. Just look at what's happening already at buoy 46050 (aka newport weather buoy):
weather buoy temps
In fact, quite often after a southerly blow there is a N or NW "kickback" which would help sharpen the edges. If warm water is spread out all over, the fish often are not as concentrated. Last week, the best scores were on the edge of the warm water bubble, not in the middle (warmest) area.
After this blow is over, I think round 3 is going to be fabulous. Be ready for the next window....

Re: Swordfish Trip....Revisited
Yes! FA, that makes my day!
Now another question. Isn't this storm gonna leave some pretty heavy swells this weekend?
Popeye, don't worry. All things stop when the Sword Boat Whistle blows. I'm already packed.

The trend looks fair for Saturday, although a little large with fairly
stout winds predicted at this time. Hopefully the forcast will improve as
the week goes forward! I wanna go kill me some more TUNA!!!!!

Unfortunatly I can't go till next Friday.
If anyone has an open seat for next Friday weather permitting let me know. I still have room for more Tuna and time is getting short.
Thanks in advance...

Re: Swordfish Trip....Revisited
Weeeellll.....I just downloaded the Nobeltec "Gold" weather overlay, which is a 10 day forecast. It includes:
Pressure
Wind
Currents
Sea
Swell
Fronts
Storms
Temps
Putting everything together, I have, at least for now, concluded that the best window is Thurs/Fri/Sat of next week.
Having said that, we all know about FORECASTS, but this at least gives us an idea.
I will be watching the "Actuals" everyday to determine if the trends match.

John,
Don't let a little thing like excruciating pain slow you down. I went halibut fishing the day after having a vascotomy and elk hunting three weeks after having 1/3 of my colon removed. Remember my moto "No Brain, No Pain". Get well soon.
