Default Rookie Post

First try at posting and hoping not to embarrass myself too badly. Have had a number of interesting experiences boating and fishing through the years and would like to share one now.
My first real experience with salt water was in a little cove just north of Depoe Bay 40+ years ago. Four of us were catching a variety of rock fish and having a great time. As we were reeling in our various catch we noticed that bigger fish were following them in and in some cases trying to eat them. The idea was expressed to use our catch as bait and go for the big ones. Not having adequate equipment was not conducive to success, but a grat time was had by all and a memory was made.
A few years later I was able to get my dad into his first ever Salmon out of Newport and then his first ever Steelhead out of a drift boat on the Molalla river.
Haven't done any serious salt water fishing for many years but really have the bug again after reading Salty Dog posts. Am in the process of updating my "fleet" to include an offshore boat again!

Welcome, Treegolfer. I think most of us can relate to big fish following our little fish. Did you guys try netting or gaffing one of the "followers?" I know I have - tried, that is.

You've fallen in with a great crowd.

Welcome. What kind of boat are you adding to the fleet?

Thanks for the welcome, Saltys.

If we had a net or gaff with us we definitely would have tried them. All we had were some woefully inadequate poles and an assortment of tackle not suited to the task at hand. That's probably why it was so much fun, and a real challenge. Experience was not one of our strong points at our age at the time.

Not sure what boat I'll be getting at this time. Almar Sounder is high on my list but the price is a little scary. Have had good luck in the past with Boston Whalers and have talked to Ed Wing a couple of times at his shop. Have looked at new but am constantly watching the used market for possibilities. Have been retired for a few years so funds are somewhat limited.

Hope to find something in the 23 to 25 foot range for trailering. Like trying different places at different times so portability is an issue.
