A reward of up to $1,000 is offered for information related to an investigation into the unlawful use of logging equipment to destroy thousands of dollars worth of timber on Longview Timber property off Scappoose - Vernonia Highway in late November. The reward is being offered by Oregon Hunters Association - Columbia County Chapter and Longview Timber, in cooperation with the Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division.
According to OSP Senior Trooper Robin May, on the evening of Friday, November 21st or the early morning hours of November 22nd an unknown person(s) unlawfully entered Longview Timber property near milepost 11 and unlawfully used logging equipment to destroy a wooded area approximately 370-feet long by 15-feet wide. The logging equipment was being used as part of a logging operation of 18 – 20 year old timber.
A total of 47 trees were destroyed about a half mile from the logging site. Damage is estimated in the thousands.
Anyone with information, including anonymous tips, regarding this investigation is asked to contact Senior Trooper Robin May at 503-397-0325 ext. 43 or the Oregon State Police TIP line at 1-800-452-7888.

Re: Reward offered in investigation of destroyed timber
Oh....crap.
We should inform Longview Timber that as HUNTERS, we keep our eyes open for this kind of stuff, and HUNTERS in their woods can help catch people like this.
....gonna ruin it for all of us.....

Re: Reward offered in investigation of destroyed timber
I think that is one of the reasons some land was locked up this year and you could not drive in some LF roads. I know that was the case on the LF main line above Cedar Creek in the Scappoose unit.

Re: Reward offered in investigation of destroyed timber
I've always though that perhaps the stupidest things in life to do were:
1) Dress up in a gazell outfit and slap a lion in the face, then run...
2) Mess with a logger, his equipment, or his job site...
3) (added today) Attempt to run over an OSP decoy, with my family in the car...
Hope they catch those involved....

I think you should add:
"Mess with a Marine, his equipment, or his chow."

Exactly!
I've called them before to report activity, and would again. We're partners in my mind.

Re: Reward offered in investigation of destroyed timber
I heard about this a week ago, but was asked to keep it quiet (ongoing investigation). What we are looking for here people is somebody who saw pickups or people in the area that was vandalized, this includes logging crews. Who ever did this knew exactly what they were doing and were equipment operators, this is not the average case of vandalism. It is suspected the equipment was used to get elk out. Doesn't anybody know how to pack any more??
We need the reward system like Washington has, a co-worker caught a guy poaching a deer off his land, didn't have a tag, trying to use his wifes.......well the game officer called up and slapped the guy with $3,100 in tickets. The officer showed up the other day and gave the co-worker the choice, $500 or 10 preference points. He took the points and now has a very good chance of getting a trophy bull hunt.

Are you kidding me????? 10 preferance points??? Since when did that enter into the equation of the reward system??
Kudos to your co-worker for doing the right thing. My hat is off to him but I am not too thrilled with the offered reward.

It is quite a bit different in Washington; since at this point there are no guaranteed tags for the top point holders and the points are only squared for deer, elk and goat, it really is only enhancing an individual's opportunity to draw by significantly increasing the number of "balls in the hopper" if you will.
If the same system was implemented in Oregon it would immediately guarantee some people drawing a tag that they are currently several years away from. That has both positives and negatives attached to it.

Ok, that makes sense. Plus I missed the part of the guy being from Washington. My hat is still off to the guy regardless.

Re: Reward offered in investigation of destroyed timber
Never heard of getting preference points as a TIP reward. OSP can't agive points I don't believe. ODFW would have to authorize that.
