Default Marlin 336 30-30

You know, I bought one a while ago on sale at one of the mart stores and didnt shoot it till today. A buddy gave me 100 rounds of Ammo for my Birthday and I figured I needed to burn a few up. I love this gun. I had a model 94 winchester it was my first rifle and I sold it to buy a new bow. man that was a mistake. but I got to say this 336 marlin is hands down a better shooter. I know what my brush/west side gun will be in the years to come. heck I'll bet I can kill a deer with it. Id love to see some pics of animals harvested with a 30-30

If I ever start rifle hunting again, maybe for deer, a Marlin 30-30 is one of the guns on my list. I'm torn between the XLR series and the 336, maybe a stainless in natural wood.

The newer XLR 308 Marlin express with the revolution ammo also sounds like a great gun.......except for the hard to find ammo.

Did you shoot any Hornady Lever revolution shells? I'm wondering how much difference these rounds make over regular ammo.

Glad to see you're enjoying the lever gun,

Gregg

You won't believe the difference when you shoot them! Using them I can use my .30-30 the same way and at the same ranges my brother does with his .30-06 out to about 300 yards. At 300 yards it has only about 4" more of drop than my brother's .30-06 and my .308 which is about 12" of drop less than a normal .30-30 shooting 150gr flat tips has. you have to see it to believe it. I get groups with my Winchester lever action .30-30 with open sights that I never would have believed possible. I turned my .30-30 into a gun I can take predator calling. The ammo is pretty spectacular.

I just wish they had it in .32 Winchester Special because I have an old octagonal barrel .32 I would love to try it in.

No I havent tried it yet. I had 100 rounds of 150 cor lok I think i'll buy some of those rounds as well but this gun is mainly a reprod gun IMHO. I have a 7mm for the long work. but heck I mostly bow hunt but im thinking of rifle hunting again

Here is my problem with a open sighted rifle when it is early or late and cloudy and your in the Timber your going to miss your scope. There are limitations I won't ever hunt without one again.

A few points...

I have a 444 marlin and it kicks @$$. With hard cast 355 grain bullets traveling at 2200 fps, it pack a punch. Shoots the same bullets as a 44 magnum and we all know how good the bullet choice is for that.

Go with Skinner Sights. Good peeps at a reasonable cost. I cannot see the buckhorn rear that comes with the guns. I installed a rear peep that mounts in the rear scope holes. It is wonderful!

I also got an XS scout scope mount. I plan on getting a scout scope (extended eye relief) with quick release mounts. Then you can have the best of both worlds at a moments notice.

Wait a while before buying the 308. Marlin has a 338 to release shortly. Hornady has the ammo on their site already. Rather than matching a 308 you would be matching 30/06 ballistics! This with a marlin lever gun.

Great to see lever gun kills! I am gunna do it next year!!!
