Re: Banning All Cougar Hunting...
What a load of....
What a way to take a study out of context.
1. Do hunters really target big males? Personally, I'd shoot any cougar I see.
2. Sure, the big males control larger territory and killing them lets more, younger, cougars in an area. But does that really mean more human/cougar interaction because most of those are with younger cougars?

Re: Banning All Cougar Hunting...
Oh brother, what a crock. The study in Washington was biased, when you read that the one researcher started to cry when she knew one of the cats was killed, tells the story. Which state has more human conflicts, California or Montana? Sure cali has more people, but probably less cats.

Then again, if cougars are so "valuable", maybe we make it a two elk for one cougar swap, although I'm perfectly fine for the 1 for 1! Heck, if they want to come get them, they can have them gratis!

Re: Banning All Cougar Hunting...
Don't laugh! "Big Wildlife" is an Oregon based non-profit that has already been spewing this rhetoric around here. Banning ALL cougar hunting and/or cougar management in general is a very real (and attainable) goal for the Anti's. The time is coming soon when all Oregon hunters will need to stick together and fight either a Ballot Initiative or Legislation to this effect.

As someone who holds a cougar tag in my pocket, I would agree with the second part of the statement (in the context of it being a legal hunting situation ).
I do think it needs to be acknowledged that people who pay the $3000-$4500 for a week-long trophy cougar hunt in Montana are in many cases likely to not shoot just any cougar they come across. They paid those kind of dollars for a reason.

Re: Banning All Cougar Hunting...
Before the ban, that is what most houndsmen did, took the males, we didn't seem to have a problem then, but then we didn't have 6,000 hungry cougars either!

Re: Banning All Cougar Hunting...
The whole point of being able to hunt with hounds was so that you could pick and choose which cats to shoot. The other thing that was a flawed study not too long ago that we talked about on here remember the bear issue they were shooting too many bears in WA too? I will bet these guys have ties to HUSA and PETA and the whole ploy again is not to protect but because we complain so much about preditation issues they have found another way to reduce hunting or end all together while they wait for the wolves to get estabished in the NW.
Not for one min do I think they guys are worried about the cougar males.
PS they never stop trying to make us change our life styles....
Oh yea what about the state with the most encounters CA they have no approved cat hunting but they have the most human encounters where is that data mentioned at?
And what about the science of the young cats being pushed out their hunting areas when they become adults but the older cats that is the natural order so it would make sense that the younger cats are in the most trouble they have to come into more contact with the people looking for new hunting areas.
PLEASE

Re: Banning All Cougar Hunting...
"Wielgus said hunters often target adult males, which act as a stabilizing force in cougar populations. The adults police large territories and drive out or kill young males.
With the adults gone, Wielgus said, the "young hooligans" run wild. He said most cougar conflicts with humans involve cats younger than 2 who are just learning to live on their own."
This makes no sense. Adult males do drive the younger males out........where though? to less desirable territory often near people where they wont be killed by a dominant male. If you kill an adult male then you just opened a new territory for a young male.
This is just another anti hunting group trying to push walt disney wildlife management on the masses. I love this......"young hooligans run wild".......and before you know it without the adult Toms acting as father figures they will be down at the circle K stealing beer and cigarettes.....Give me a break.
