Default My day with Bug_ Flicker - the rock pile

We left my house after loading the White Water at 3:15 am and headed to Newport Bay. I had never been there before so I was really looking forward to the trip and going to the Pile.
When we got there it was very foggy. We met Ugly Green and Wildhawg who were already there.
We launched and waited for a little light. Then we headed out. Once we got away from the lights we found out just how foggy it was. We could see a whole 200 feet sometimes less and it was that way the whole day. The wind never moved. The ocean was flat.
We got out to the pile in about an hour and fifteen minuts. We had to go very slow sometimes because we could not see in front of the boat. When we got there we just had a ball. We both caught Lings and other bottom fish. I caught one too small Halibut. Keith got stuck on the bottom and had to work and work to get loose. He finally got it loose and was bringing his rig up when about 10 feet behind the boat a 20 pound Chinook slammed his bait and took off. At the same time I was fighting a Coho that was the livelest one I have ever caught. Fun Fun Fun.
We met several other I-Fishers out there and its a comfort to know that if one is in trouble they will come to your aid.
We came to the rescue of UG. They forgot THEIR NET.
We just had a great day and the boat performed terrifically for the first time in the great Blue.
We came back at 30 mph as we could see a little better but not good enough to run any faster.
We went to Deope Bay to cark the fish and Depoe Bay Dan was doing UG's fish. He even did some of our fish. This is one cool dude. He really knows how to fillet a fish too.
We finished our fish and Keith got behind the wheel and I went to sleep and we came home.
Thanks for the driving Keith. You're a heck of a fisherman too.
For some reason I can't post the pictures Keith sent me. Maybe he will post them.

Thanks for the report.
WTG Bug-flicker!! The Rock Pile in late summer is one heck of a place to catch fish!!

Peace, Tom

(ps) hey Kieth, much easier to land fish with a human as a deck hand, huh.

I recieved an email from someone requesting that I upload these pic's for them. Guess they didn't realize what a nightmare it is to upload them. Or maybe they did and that is why they suckered me into it?

So here we go! The first one is of Sturgeon Tom and Bugflicker with their rock pile catch.

The second one is of Sturgeon... and their... Like to point out that the first red species (sebastes) is a yelloweye rockfish (note the yellow eyeball) which is the one you cannot keep if you have a halybut onboard. The second species (also a sebastes family) is a vermillion rockfish that you can have onboard with a halybut. The others are ling's and a chinook (I hope) and a quillback rockfish (another sabastes). By the way, they did not have a halybut onboard.
The missing link is a canary rockfish (sebastes)which you cannot keep if you have a halybut on board. Quiz at 11.

This next pic I haven't a clue. Could be a shark, a dolphin, Pilar's dream tuna, a sub or maybe just Brad (UG) diving for halibut?

Anyway, I can understand your lack of success posting these pic's. I think I have seen more picture posting threads on here than DepoeBayDan pic's! That's incredible!

The pic's you sent me were 400-800kb's. That's a bit too large a file to post on ifish or probably any website. They were in a jpeg format which is what you want. The physical size was 2048x1536 pixels and that is too big to get below the required 100kb's. So you have to resize the pic's to a much smaller size to get the desired file size. I usually go for 640x480 or if I crop them 640x whatever the other dimension comes out. When I did that your pic's are now ranging from approx. 17kb's to 50kb's.

Then there is the other problem. This pic upload is very picky. Sept. 05... will not work. You have to rename them to something with 8 letters or less, no numbers,etc...

I create an ifish folder directly on my hard drive so the path is not too long (thanks to the Geek for stirring me in the right direction there).

Then if all goes well you don't get a message after you attempt to upload that says such & such name has been used recently. If that happens grab the nearest hammer or nearest beer. I've resorted to the hammer as of late.

And there you go (hopefully)!

Bug Flicker & Sturgeon Tom...... glad to see you got a nice limit of cod and weren't left fishless. Yep them smaller ones are tasty !

Reefdiver and myself are glad to see that you made it back to port - even without our battery.

Nice trip back to NPT - when the fog cleared we could make a good 30kts. Not many days you can do that on big blue.

<`))><
