Well, I finally broke the boat in with some albacore on Friday. The seas were nice, although the fog was a nuisance all day. Thanks to the Ifish posted coordinates, we were actually able to find fish this time.
We started out for the "61 spot" and dropped in when we saw some jumpers. At 8:00 AM, we put the first fish in the boat, but then we had a long dry spell until we actually hit the "61". The bite wasn't great, but we were picking about a fish every 30-40 minutes. At about 1:30 PM we decided to troll south towards the area that ATC had reported fish on Wednesday.
About 3 miles south of "61", we started getting bit regularly with a fish every 10-15 minutes. Only problem was that we were having trouble getting a lot of these fish into the boat. We had two doubles in this area, and both times we lost both fish. I also lost one fish when I tried to horse it too quickly to keep it away from a blue shark.
We got back into port a bit after 6:00 PM. Our total count for the day was 14 in the boat and about 10 more lost. By the time we got done carking and back to the "ranch" it was about 10:00 PM.
A couple of pics to whet the appetite. First is myself, and the second is of my co-conspirator Walter.
Oops forgot one more important thing. We had our best luck on a purple and black Zuker at the end of a teaser chain, and the rest of the fish were all taken on zuchini or black/pink clones at the end of teaser chains. We tried running a diving plug and a cedar plug at times, but no luck on either.
