Sea Jypzee leaves Depoe Smelling like a skunk
But we managed to rub that strong odor off eventually.
We left Depoe Bay this morning at 06:00 behind the Sherry Marie. We stopped and put the gear in about 20 miles almost straight out of Depoe Bay, around 124 30 and 44 52 or so. We got our first fish in the boat within fairly short order on a cedar plug, and that was the last fish in the box for quite some time. One Tuna virgin deflowered, 2 more to go on the boat, so I had my work cut out for me.
We had a few hit and miss fish, but kept just working the area. Irish from Newport was in the same area, and a commercial boat along with WP. Eventually we had 4 in the boat and deflowered the 3 virgins, but it was still very slow start for us. By 11:00 we still had only 4 in the boat, WP, Enterprise and several others were doing much better. I was starting to think someone had attached a skunk to the bottom of the Sea Jypzee.
At 11:30, Crambone was ready to throw in the towel and call it quits, but we persisted and kept at it. I knew there was fish out there to be had. We just needed to wipe whatever it was that was stinking up the boat off.
We started getting into the fish about 1:00pm or so, and it was pure mahem after that. About 3pm, I decided to start heading back towards shore (31 miles out at 124 42 and 45 02) so we kept the gear out and just trolled in for another hour. At about 4pm I finally decided to call it a day and make the final run in. We kept getting fish all the way in to about the 20 mile point that we began the final run in.
Final count, 23 tuna. No peanuts, average about 20-25lbs, and 3 more TUNA virgins deflowered. They made me work at getting them fish pretty seriously, but in the end it was another very successful day. The morning seas were a little bouncy, but as the day went on, the ocean became much nicer.
The full crew:

If that is what skunk smells like, then I am all for it.
Nice way to grind it out, and come in with a nice score. I can only hope that we do half that well on Friday.

Re: Sea Jypzee leaves Depoe Smelling like a skunk
Ok I am keeping this short tonight since I am whooped. Yes it was slow and yes I did say lets call it, but I was only kidding Nancy Woody you are right about that gal working her tush off to get us into some silver bullets. That was some show out there today . I also need to say a big thank you to Depoe bay Dan for all the help in carking that mess of fish, and Nancy working her butt off some more with that BIG job. Dan I have your totes still and will be back down on Sunday in Lincoln City so I will drop them off. You can call me at 541-259-1815 and we will hook up. Also a big thank you to the good people at The Spouting Horn Restarant for staying open late so we could have some grubb. You Ifishers should give them a try, they didn't have to stay open late for us but they did and that was really going out of their way to be kind. Thanks to all that made this day happen, I am hooked .
And now off to my hot bath and warm bed, night to all.
Tim

Re: Sea Jypzee leaves Depoe Smelling like a skunk
Hmmmm, virgin count.
Well, Started the season off by deflowering Wildhawg. (you never forget your first  ). Not sure if Bob was a virgin that trip or not. I don't honestly know on him. If so, he got it too. (count=24 fish)
Second trip: Had Issac (Wildhawgs son), and BaitBoy. Honestly not sure if that was his deflowering trip or not. It was for Isaac though. (Count=21 fish)
Third Trip: Joan and DJ. Joan is an old hat at this with me, but was DJ's first. (count=13)
Fourth trip: Woody and Andy. A double virgin deflowering. (Count 2 tuna)
Fifth trip: Sturgeon Tom definitly deflowered, Keta, well not much more can be said about him, and Greg was an old hand at the tuna. (Count=8 fish).
Sixth trip: 3 virgins at once all deflowered. Crambone and friends. (Count=23 fish).
So, at least 9, possibly 11 TUNA deflowerings I've done this year.
Have done at least two Salmon deflowering but that just doesn't stand up like a TUNA job.
And one Halibut deflowering as well.

Re: Sea Jypzee leaves Depoe Smelling like a skunk
Northriver - The main hot colors for yesterday were a blue/white clone, and a mexican flag cedar plug. The rest were on mexican flag and zucinni clones for the most part. Nothing as consistant as the first two though. Was a bright sunny day, so the blue/white made great sence. I only wished I'd had a few more of them to put on the lines.
DriftR - The Sentry loves seeing me come in before a tuna trip. They have learned to keep their ice supply well stocked.
Finclipped - Ahhh, how could I have forgotten? I guess I just figure that everyone gets halibut all the time. Will correct the count accordingly for you. Actually you're the only BUT job I've had this year.

Re: Sea Jypzee leaves Depoe Smelling like a skunk
Ok I am fully awake and ready to give a great big thank you to Nancy the Tuna huntress of Depoe Bay. She has what it takes to deflower even the toughest tuna virgins I also want to thank DepoebayDan one more time for all the help and getting us some food for the trip home. Here are a couple of pictures of Rob and Jerry with the catch of the day
And here is Rob doing battle with the reel upside down Some people never learn to go both ways
A great day on the big blue pond, made extra good by spending the day with good friends and people who like fishing almost as much as me
Good fishing to all that are going after the Tuna this weekend.

Re: Sea Jypzee leaves Depoe Smelling like a skunk
Thanks so much Tim for the beautiful picture. I just got home from work but did manage to sneak a peak and saw this posted earlier today. I saved it as the wallpaper on the computer at work. Everyone loved it. It helped get me through a busy day at work.
I can just look at that sunrise and hear the boat engines, feel the motion of the sea, and have total peace and contentment in my soul just looking at it. Thanks for posting it.

Re: Sea Jypzee leaves Depoe Smelling like a skunk
Nancy,
nice Job!
I can relate to the 1st time out thrills...WOW
what fun!! Thanks for the pictures!
Crambone I love the picture of the sun coming up in the morning. I remember the 1st time leaving the dock in the dark and it was very heart warming to see the sun coming up for obvious reasons...you can SEE! Beautiful picture!
Nancy does it count me out if I've been out to Tuna town? Blackrocket got my cherry a few years back and I've never been the same.
I'd love to go out with you when you have a open seat. I can go during the week on short notice.
Love to do the TUNA DANCE !!
