Hey, I grew up about 10 miles from Lake Winnebago and have speared 5 sturgeon through the ice. The lake is probably 10 miles wide by 30 miles long roughly and about 20 feet at it's deepest. It's a roll of the dice as to water clarity, this year with lots of cold weather in January plus plenty of snow to minimize algea bloom equals fairly clear water. Couple that with a gizzard shad die off in the south end of the lake and the sturgeon were there feasting in earnest. That equals a higher than expected take limiting the season to two days.

They also spear fish pike through the ice back in the mid-West. They use a fish decoy to lure 'em in.

I did Pike and sturgeon a few weeks ago in michigan. I got 15 pike and one sturgeon I use a 2 lb sucker for the pike on a safty pin worked great as for the sturgeon I dumped a few bags of white landscape rock and I put pike guts in a panty hose and tie it to a rock and sunk it in the middle of the whit landscape rock 20 min later I had a nice sturgeon on the ice. the limmit in Michigan is one a year so that was it on the sturgeon so back to pike . I also had tip-ups set out for walleye and nailed about 20 of them and the last day I spent out on saginaw bay perch fishing and iced about 35 12+ inchers and released about 30 in the 8" range one piggy was 17" and almost 2 lbs Biggest perch I have ever seen. This was the first winter I had been back home in about 15 years and it has changed. It got Better
