Question: Taking ammo on a flight
It’s been a few years since a plane trip was involved in a hunting trip of mine. But I’m flying out on Friday for some bird hunting and I have an FAA approved case but I remember last time I could only bring ammo that was in the factory packaging and it had to be full, meaning if you had a box of shells with half missing you couldn’t take it. Does anyone know if that has changed? It’s not really an issue but I would rather not to have to deal with buying ammo when I landed.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Question: Taking ammo on a flight
5,
My wife just flew back with a rifle that used to be her dad's. I bought her a hard case to take so she could bring it back. When I opened the case when she returned it had a notice inside that the airline had placed in there with instuctions for transporting fireams and ammo.
It did state that ammo was required to be in the original manufacturing packaging, but I do not remember reading anything about full boxes only.
I am sure that there is on-line instructions from the airline that you are using.
Good luck.

Re: Question: Taking ammo on a flight
When I went to Africa last year the rule was, in factory boxes stowed in your luggage (not the gun case). And a max of ten pounds in weight. Hope that helps.

Re: Question: Taking ammo on a flight
Guns and ammo can't be in the same case. Not aware of a weight limit. Took four boxes to Arizona for the dove opener this year.

the person who checked my bags at PDX didn't know the rules of the airline they worked for
after looking it up the individual informed me that their weight limit for ammo was 50 pounds so i was ok

Re: Question: Taking ammo on a flight
We fly to sporting events quite often and I take my small gauge shells with me. You are allowed 7 lbs per person , must be in factory box and separate from your gun case, in your checked baggage is fine.
Your gun case must be lockable , but do not lock until it is inspected.

It's may depend on the airlines, but with Alaska Air they DO NOT inspect your gun. They don't even want to see it. It must be in a locked case that only you have the key to and you sign a release at that check in counter.
Keep your ammo in your other checked bag. Easy as pie!

Re: Question: Taking ammo on a flight
Unless those shotguns are some super duper sweet handloads, simply buy shells at your destination. Otherwise, (the last time I air traveled) shells had to be stored in their original boxes and transported separately from your gun. You should call TSA for any update and don't believe anything you read here.

Looks like you can bring ammo for your .50 cal, but leave your 20mm ammo at home
