Well I finally found some elk today in a big clearcut about 800 yrds out so I went in after them. While I was walking up the road I seen some movement down in a ravine about 50 or so yrds away. It was a buck! He didnt even see me, I drew and fired, A miss. He must have been a bit further. He strated up the hill and I tried one more time and missed again. I ran up the road to cut him off, I got to about 35 yrds and I seen antlers coming thru the brush. I stopped and drew, He came out on the road and stopped, looked at me and by then it was too late. My arrow went in at the base of the neck and came out the other side behind the front shoulder. He made this grunt sound and ran about 30 yrds and dropped.
I went on up the road giving the buck some time to expire. I topped over and seen the elk, they were down on a bench. I tried to get closer but they winded me and ran off. Cant wait for the weekend, hopefully they will still be there.

The spots on the side of the buck was not hair loss syndrome. Those are from dragging it about a mile out on the road.

Pink Salmon you need to get down here! There are more than just one buck in that place.

dragging out this buck took its toll on me. I am ready for bed now. I can imagine what and elk is going to do to me if I get one in there. Might rent a helicopter to get it out. Or bring a fork and a knife and eat my way out.

I know exactly how you feel, that's why I bought a cart, I plan to never drag another deer out of the woods.

Yea we tied a rope to him and drug him out. There were 3 of us, if it was only me I would have either quartered him or halved him. Big bodied buck and dead weight is much different than live weight.

Yea he was all by himself, I wasnt even looking for him. I was trying to get above the elk and there he was. The animals in this little area dont even seem to have had any hunting pressure. Going back to put a little on them tomorrow and friday.

I took it to the butcher today, it dressed out at 90 lbs. The butcher noticed that the back had a lump in it. There were 2 hole in each side of the backstrap. Could this have been a cougar attack? When I was skinning it out I noticed the holes and they were oozing blood.

no the one we saw was in the trask unit and this one came from stott mtn. I think the other one was bigger though.

great buck man. i hunted the stott mtn unit but where i hunted they had a ton of hunting pressure i was only able to get some pics of a nice 3point buck from my trail cam i set up there.
