What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
All this talk about Deer, Bear, Coyotes, Cougar, Bob cats, etc.. What about the grouse, and Rabbits?
This has got to be my best Grouse kill. 13 yards, with a slingshot. I used the sling shot so I didn't screw up my evening Deer hunt, with a gunshot.

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
Nice post.
I miss hunting grouse - growing up in Western Montana, wasn't the start of fall, scouting for elk and deer, without coming home with some blues.
Can't quite tell what you are using there - my favorite aside from trusty .22 was a .410 that my great uncle won in a raffle for .50 in the early 30's during the depression. It was a single shot, Iver Johnson Arms & Motorcycle Works ... still have it, sweet gun. Use to carry a couple of slugs in my jacket, just in case, and it has been known to happen that a switch of ammo occured when snap loading for second shot at a grouse.
Use to go after them with a wrist-rocket - lead balls - good for you.

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
Everytime I'm in the woods, if it's season, I take my 20 gauge, 22 mag over under. I love to shoot Rabbits, and Grouse, they are good eatin', and fun to hunt. In the picture with the big blue, I was actually turkey hunting, that's an 870 Express pump. 12 gauge. I love shooting them at long distances with the 22 mag. clean kill, and fun shootin.

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
Thanks guys. Most people I talk to about it, are completely against it.. "I have pet rabbits at home! You can't kill those!" And, "You kill Grouse? That's got to be illegal." It's great to know some people still believe in it!

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
Great picture big D. nothing beats a day with a few grouse in the bag, my son got his first one this year. Needless to say he's pumped. Slingshot sounds fun, reminds me of my first bird hit it with a rock it was to close to shoot. Keep up the fun stuff of the outdoors don't let life change your ways. That's the mistake I made for about 15 years.

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
Very nice.
Last year during the high buck, a fellow ifisher came scootin back to camp to grab his wrist rocket to shoot a gouse he'd seen a short distance away. To my disbelief he shot it in the head first try. I tried practicing when I got home, and I was lucky to hit a pop can 1 out of 5 times. Definatly harder than it looks.

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
While elk hunting this year, I hit about 8 grouse with a judo point and i repeatedly would just get an arrow full of feathers as the bird would fly off. I finally knocked one silly enough that I was able run up to it and thump it on the head. Next year I am going to try the G5 small game heads.

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
Grouse and rabbits are great hunts. Also a favorite hunt with coyotes & bobcats.
On a scouting trip for elk in the Wash Cascades I took a wrist rocket along.
The grouse I shot at were willing to stay on the ground as rock after rock went the wrong direction. (I blame the rocks.)
Eventually I was able to take a grouse out of the small flock.
Another grouse in Washington fell out of a tree after a head shot with a 30-06. Went to pick up the grouse by the feet. It's head was still in one piece. Seemed the bullet had come close enough to knock it out with out hitting even a feather. Hanging by it's feet must have revived the bird. All the blood rushing to it's head probably helped. I'd like to have taken flight with the birds powerful wings. Probably would have lost my grip in that case.
My hunting partner suggested I hold it up so he could getg another try at the head. I thought of a better idea. I removed the head of the grouse with my free hand.

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
That's weird that you have problems with the Judo point.. All the grouse that I've shot with a Judo point have fell over, and flopped for a while... How much weight are you pulling? I'm pulling about 68, and that works good. Another trick my dad taught me was tearing up an old rag, or sock, and using a small piece around a field point, then using duct tape, or electrical tape, and wrap it pretty thick.. That's worked too.

64lbs. It just seemed like the wires on the judo would tear feathers off and deflect. My buddy had the same problem. We kept getting feather shiskabobs. lol

Re: What about Grouse, and Rabbits?
Oh, alright so you're using the wired ones? Those are cool, I usually use those for rabbits, and squirrels.. I use the metal Judo points, with a tad bit of a blade I guess for grouse.. I'm not posotive what the brand is.
