Duck Commander and Black Cloud
Time for me to buy some more shells and I saw this press release ...
John and Bucky
Black Cloud Duck Commander Special Edition #3 Load Wreaks Havoc
ANOKA, Minnesota- - Federal Premium® Black Cloud™ stormed onto the scene last year with steel shot technology waterfowlers had never seen. This season, Federal reminds hunters the Duck Commander Special Edition #3 shot option brings even more attitude to this breakthrough load.
In its first year, Black Cloud's payload of FLITESTOPPER™ and Premium® Steel provided devastating performance on ducks and geese. Hunters that took advantage of this load saw the extended range, higher retained energy and increased down range velocity the proven FLITECONTROL® wad gave them. It put the maximum amount of pellets on target every time.
"When we introduced Black Cloud last year, we knew it would set the standard for steel ammunition," said Director of Marketing Kyle Tengwall. "Once waterfowlers got a chance to try it out, they agreed. We saw an unprecedented response to Black Cloud as emails and phone calls praising this new product flooded in. And the Duck Commander and his boys liked it so much, they wanted their own load."
This year, Federal Premium extends the product line at the request of the Duck Commander. Phil Robertson loved Black Cloud so much that he not only made it the exclusive ammunition of his video, but he wanted to endorse a special load. Look for the Duck Commander's image on the box of special edition #3 Black Cloud loads.

Sounds to me like they want to make more money from a shot shell that has already made them plenty. I like the way the Duck Commander is working a deal with Federal that I am sure has some perks for them in the deal, not to mention the great endorsement.
I will stick with the standard steel load and leave the Black Cloud for the good old commander boys.

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
i interpret this as: (duck commander) hay why don't you make this stuff in #3's ? (federal) we are setting up production right now ! (duck commander) well ship me 10 cases when it is done ! (federal) our marketing guy wants to talk to you ! (duck commander) free shells gets my attention ! Checks in the bank are also a motivator.

That's for sure! It's terrible under 15 yards.

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
What isn't terrible inside 15 yards? Unless you've got a wide open choke, about any load is going to mangle a duck that close!

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
Why is it that so many folks bash endorsements and celebrities on this site?
I've been on the boards for a while and it's a pattern for all things. I actually hesitated a second before I posted this because of it.
I was hoping for some interesting discussion about #3. I for one have never shot #3's and I probably shoot more than all of you.
Is it jealousy? What good does that do?
Stop it.
Anybody want to discuss the merits of #3's rather than bash somebody or some company's marketing department?

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
how was that bashing? a guy wants his favorite load, gets it, gets paid to shoot it. federal gets the endorsment for marketing the product. sounds like a win for him and a win for federal. HOW is this bashing again i do not get that

OK OK OK, not the discussion I was looking for but I'll retract.
Has anyone shot #3?

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
I usually shoot #3's and they miss just as well as as any other number. As for the blackcloud BB's I use for geese, the other day I took feathers off both wings and acually saw the down come out of the breast and the goose just kept on truckin.

I shoot #3, i like it. It shoots better in my gun than #2. I have killed more birds since i switched last season.

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
We bought a case of Federal #3's from Joe's about 5 years ago, and I wasn't all that impressed. I'm pretty sure they were the previous years batch and the brass tarnished once you put them in your pockets. They had no resistance against corrosion what so ever. I finally had to take them out and shoot some trap just to use them up
#3 shot seems to be a good mix of pellet size and number per shell, but that batch seemed to be a bit gutless.
Just my on what I've shot.

Interesting, what size birds, what range. Can you tell me a little more?

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
Back when I first started hunting waterfowl the shotgun I had at the time would not pattern #1,2 shot at all. So I used to shoot 3" # 3 1 1/8 oz remington nitro loads all the time and had no problems with it all. We did a lot of jump shooting back then on small ponds and canals for mallards and wigeons so some of the shots were pretty far and they had no problem killing bigger birds at 40 -50 yards.

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
I've traditionally shot #2s.
But a couple of years ago I picked up a bunch of Kent Fasteel #3s when I was trying to "help" Bi-Mart clean off their shelves at the end of the season.
In "Decoy" shooting range they seem to work JUST as well as the #2s, if not even a little better.
Guess that makes sense? There's MORE of them!

Re: Duck Commander and Black Cloud
Doesnt the Duck Commander hunt in the flooded timber? So wouldnt the average shot be fairly short and at a backpeddling duck? How does this relate to what we do here?
I used to shoot some 3's. They worked just like 2's, but were less available. I dont shoot good enough to say one way or another. One good thing about 3's is at the stores that carry them, they usualy stay on the shelf longer than 2's.
Kinda seems like a middle ground to me. If 4's arent enough, would 3's be barely good enough and 2's be just right? Or would that make 3's just right and 2's a little much?
I'm sticking with the 2's, 3's are just odd!

Well assuming that #3 Steel equates with #5 Lead (and sometimes these equations get a little "messed up", like ppl telling you that one IS just as effective as the other )
#5 Lead WAS one serious Duck KILLING load!

I used to have (and sometimes) load some #3 Lead...
Now, over decoys, you want to talk about death on Decoying Geese!

, Exactly. It's marketing at its best. Shoot them the right way and you wouldn't notice a difference because dead is dead
