Default Tuna tomorrow where?

Wp, ElShaddi, and the mobile flotilla

Looking at this mornings Satelite shot, should we be thinking of the Columbia instead of Depoe Bay for tomorrow morning? Advice from you more experienced Salty Dogs would be appreciated. Should we be driving north tonight?

Tide data for Astoria at Tounge Point

2003-09-03 7:48 AM PDT High Tide 5.74 feet
2003-09-03 12:58 PM PDT Low Tide 2.29 feet
2003-09-03 7:08 PM PDT High Tide 8.12 feet
2003-09-04 2:38 AM PDT Low Tide -0.16 feet
2003-09-04 9:11 AM PDT High Tide 5.57 feet
2003-09-04 2:09 PM PDT Low Tide 2.85 feet

Looks like a pretty strong tide. Be very cautious on the bar if you do go there. I haven't seen the SST yet...

I am planning on Depoe and heading toward 124.30 45.00 and tthen trolling NW until I find something. That is unless someone has a better idea of where they are. I avoid the Columbia bar..not experienced with it and hate the risk level I perceive it to have. I would consider going south to CoosBay if I had a hot report from there, it is only about 2 hours for me.

Ray and Wp
There is a pretty good shot on coast watch. Looks like the warm water is closed in by a finger of cold to the south and to the north. My main question : does that concentrate the fish or does that make it likely that the warm water in that area will go away? I would rather go from Depoe as the Sherry Marie is more experienced there. Just casting to the pool of knowledge.

Go fish the southern edge of the warm spot. If that edge is near one of the seamounts, you are golden. Temp. breaks herd fish and bait, structure holds fish as over a hundred waypoints in my library clearly show. Even a 1/2 degree break if there is trash in the water or a color change can be a hot spot.

Remember the scale of the Satellite shot .. that spot is much bigger than you perceive it to be. Look for an early bite and then a late afternoon bite too. This will get stronger as the moon fills out and they begin the feed all night thing.

I'm with WP, it looks like the easy pickin's will be down south by Coos Bay. That's a lot easier drive for us than it is for you.

I don't consider myself ready to tackle the Columbia bar though. Give me some more hours on the boat and some more time on the water. I may want to look at that one first as a deckhand on someone else's boat.

Seems that leaves Dopey as a good alternative - at least for me.

The CR bar can be a real treat! But the best way is to get out there with someone who has experience and run it a few times. It is really nothing to worry about as long as you hit it at the right time. If you guys can run the narrow little Depot Bay then you can run the CR Bar as long as you time the tides right. you guys know that unlike Depot bay there is an ebb and flood at the CR and it plays a hugh role in the crossing conditions. Of course there are other things to consider too, but you will get the hang of it after a couple of times. From my experience on this board (not long) all of you show great common sense and a genuine caring for each other especially when it comes to giving useful information. I know all of you will play it safe and make sure you know what you are doing before attempting anything on your own.
P.S. If you guys think these bar crossings are interesting, you should try Deception Pass or Big Bay canada, nothing like having to worry about logs that have been pulled down to the bottom springing back to the surface under your boat and driving a giant hole through the hull!

Ray,
That is a very generous offer and very tempting! I would love to be able to talk boats and fishing with you and get a better nights rest too! Unfortunately I am the bus for my crew and I still have the mate to deal with...she seems to think she has some kinda rights to time with me, even during tuna season....go figure! I will have to wait until the A.M. to come over. Thanks again for the thought! BTW, I have not heard of anyone having trouble parking in the lot the night before. Not at all like Newport is!

I will be coming over in the early am (spending the night sleeping or trying to sleep, at home.) This how I usually go. It is about 2 hours to get ready, fuel, trailer over, and launch. Thjis means I will be up at approximately 0330 in the morning and be ready to go out the slot at 0600. See ya all in the A.M., and don't forget to continue the tuna dance!
