Salty Dogs make the Oregonian...again
In Bill Monroe's column today about his recent tuna trip on the Irish, he also quotes Popeye and Pilar about their upcoming billfish adventure. Big article, nice pics, great story.

Blubeast-
I read most of it, didn't really like the guy in the picture with the .44... Call me a pacifist, but I don't agree with killing a species you are not going to eat. If you lose a fish to a sea lion, bummer but oh well... to stand and shoot at the sharks is a bit much. They wouldn't be there if you weren't chumming blood overboard. Deal with it is my opinion. I am sure someone will tell me otherwise, just my $.02.

Re: Salty Dogs make the Oregonian...again
Rip'N - I'm with you on the senseless killing thing. I didn't see the picture you're referring to, but I think it is important to remember that drama sells papers.
I don't know how it is on the larger charters, but in a small boat, sharks are pretty scary when they come after your tuna. Imagine leaning over the gunwale to grab your tuna leader when up comes a shark out of nowhere after your fish. Or, better, you've got hold of the leader and Charlie sees Mr. Shark and decides a trip to the bottom is in order.
On Miss B Haven a last week, we used a gaff to splash the water to scare the sharks away.
Oh, and point of clarification, we don't chum blood overboard, but ya gotta wash the decks. Again, on Miss B, we had sharks even when we weren't washing down the decks.
Thanks for posting Dale! I can't wait to see Bill's report post-billfish trip!

Re: Salty Dogs make the Oregonian...again
Got it in my notes..."Probably will"...
And I have to sort of agree on the shark shooting, although in the Navy during swim call on a destroyer in the South China Sea it seemed like a pretty good idea.
I just report this stuff...take a pix now and then. Readers draw their own conclusions. It was, on the other hand, a dramatic picture that captured the moment regardless of your morals.
Not printed to sell papers, though...that seems to take care of itself.

Good luck Popeye and crew. Have a safe trip and bring back lots of stories.

Re: Salty Dogs make the Oregonian...again
Bill, thank you for your story. Ken may have some history with the sharks. Most seamen that have history with 'Galanos' have little tolerance for them. It was a common practice to lead poison any overly curious sharks while fishing or diving on my Dad's boat in Florida. I don't see any reason why it is wrong even 35 years later and a different ocean. Maybe hunting them that way just for the meanness or 'sport?' of it is wrong.
Looks like you had just about the best TUNA! trip possible. Any day that includes the mother school and jumpers as far as you can see is a damn fine one. BTW, Bill you got it just right. For me this is for 'Santiago'. We may go too far but I plan on taking all of you with Team Swordfish and I by writing about it.
My fondest wish is that I can take you there and you can live the moment with us.

Re: Salty Dogs make the Oregonian...again
It was a great story Bill, and the pics were dramatic.
I have lost loads of salmon to sea lions in CA, and I imagine beating the sharks is the same deal, crank down the drag, and horse your fish in. If you lose the fish, at least the predator doesn't get a free meal.
I can't see killing any fish you don't plan to use, and I wouldn't condone it on my boat.

Re: Salty Dogs make the Oregonian...again
Congrats Bruce and Pilar on the press. Good luck on the upcoming trip. Bruce, did you get misquoted or did you really say "We might catch a bunch of dorado -- probably will"
During last El Nino, when water temps hit 70s off CA, I know of 1, count em, 1 dorado caught north of Point Conception. I hope you do, but "probably"? Just givin you a hard time, pal. Since I am not going I can say it. You probably will. Go get em Julie Rose.
I agree about the 44 mag in the pic. I have never lost an albie to a shark, and if I did, I would just catch another. We are fishing in THEIR house. And safety factors in too. No way I want a loaded, cocked hand cannon on the deck of any boat I am on.

Re: Salty Dogs make the Oregonian...again
Kurt,
It went sumpin like this: If we catch anything, it will proly be sumpin like a Dorado, or a Marlin, or, maybe a Bluefin. BUT, we are really goin' ta TRY to catch a Sword
Edit: I DID say...If we get into Dorado, there is a chance to catch a few because THEY school up.
