TUNA this week?
Well it looks like a possible window may be opening up for a mid-week tuna run about thursday.
Forecast as of 3:30 am PDT on September 1, 2003
Coastal Waters From Cascade Head To Florence Oregon And Westward 60 Nm
Small Craft Advisory Today
N wind 25 kt...rising to 30 kt in the afternoon. Wind waves 6 ft. NW swell 8 ft at 6 seconds. Patchy morning fog.
Tonight
N wind 30 kt...becoming NE 20 kt after midnight. Wind waves 6 ft. NW swell 7 ft at 7 seconds.
Tue
NE wind 20 kt...becoming W 15 kt in the afternoon. Wind waves 4 ft. NW swell 6 ft at 6 seconds.
Tue Night
NW wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. NW swell 7 ft.
Wed
NW wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. NW swell 7 ft.
Wed Night
NW wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. W swell 7 ft.
Thu
NW wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. W swell 6 ft.
Fri
W wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. W swell 6 ft.
I'm looking at a possible run out on thursday. If Crambone and crew are good to go then, they'll fill the seats. Otherwise may have some open seats, or just not go. Thursday is about the only 'hole' in my schedule for this week as far as tuna go.
WP? Marty? Mark? Anyone else thinking about heading out? Lets pack up.

Re: TUNA this week?
Nancy and everyone,
I plan to try the tuna waters on Thursday, if at all possible. I liked where you got fish and I like the improving weather. If things work out I will come over Wednesday for a look see. Lets do the tuna dance and hope!

Re: TUNA this week?
I may be free this thursday but I have to check into my schedule a little further. If you need a wingman let me know! I have the gear but have not had a chance to go out of the coast for tuna yet. I am in a 23'6" boat which is not as big or ocean friendly as the Sea J. but I am willing to get beaten up a little bit. Before I would make any commitment I would have to know where you are going out of and approximate distance. I would love to chase the Sea J. and utilize the experience of the crew on that boat! I would have at least 1 more person on my boat. I might have another opening on the boat but no more than that! I want to keep things as simple as possible until I find out what kind of mess I am getting myself into. My number 503-313-3481 (cell) if you have any questions for me before you make any kind of decision wheather I can run with you or not. I do have experience out in the ocean 30 miles but not with tuna. Most of my experience come for the west side of Vancouver Island and San Juan area. Please keep me posted.
For anyone else reading this post I would usually say first come first served to the extra spot on my boat, but since I have not done Tuna before (except in Hawaii), I would like someone with experience if this is going to happen. After a few runs under my belt then I will open the spot up to people with less boat experience and no tuna experience. Sorry, but I think this is best for everyone.

Re: TUNA this week?
fishrite - Yep, I've got a full crew for this trip coming up. I have a few other people on the list for empty seats. If one comes open though, I'll give ya a shout. I'm not sure how many more trips I'll be making out for tuna this year.
RockNReel - If we go, it'll be out of Depoe Bay. Distance is variable really. Saturday we were getting fish at about 21 miles NW. I'd guess we'll be anywhere from 20-40 miles offshore thursday. My guess is that your boat is probably much faster than the Sea Jypzee unless I really eat up the gas. I can do about 15kts with decent ocean conditions. Saturday I could do about 10kts. You're welcome to tag along on the wing. It sounds like WP will be there as well.
WP - I'm dancing!! You must be too. It's working.

Re: TUNA this week?
WoooHooo!!!
Sounding better all the time!
RocknReel, I run a 20' boat and am a little faster than Nancy, on flat water. I doubt we will be running too fast on Thursday however! You are very welcome to join us...we love company. When fishing, the boats frequently are out of sight (usually until fish are found at least)but stay in radio contact on 78 VHF. I will leave around 0600 and I think Nancy leaves a little earlier. If there is anything I can do to help out, I will be happy to. My fishing cell is 541-990-2588, and I will have it on after about 0300. You are wise to have the empty seat occupied by experienced folks. I have found that having at least one of my two seats occupied by someone with either experience on my boat or fishing albacore (preferably both!) is essential or I leave the second seat empty. Good call! Hope to see you on Thursday...covered in tuna blood! Wear old/disposable clothes, and warn any passengers too!
Nancy, it will be nice to work the wing with you again, I am hoping for 2 more trips this year. Thursday will be one of them I hope!

Re: TUNA this week?
WP,
My 1st mate has experience on my boat. Do you think that is enough? Should I hold that 2nd seat for someone with Tuna experience or do you think I could open up to someone without experience for tuna or on my boat. I have done a lot of research on Tuna, have the gear, know where to bleed the fist, how to store them, etc. The only thing I need to do is learn to cark a little tuna. Let me know what you guys think.
By the way I do run a little faster than sea J. fi the weather holds I will be running down on Thursday to run with you guys. I will be there and in the water at 6:00 am. I have two 124 qt marine coolers another smaller one and a fish storage box--built in-- up front. I need to get ice to fill these but I don't want to spend $1.00 a bag. You guys have any idea where to get it down there? Anyway, I am starting to look forward to the trip and getting prepared already. I think I need to make a couple of trips out on the CR this week just to make sure I get my fix of fishing prior so I don't explode! Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate the chance to run with you!

Re: TUNA this week?
WP - I too am looking forward to running with ya.
RockNReel - The cheapest ice here is at the Lincoln Beach Sentry at $.99/bag for crushed. The fish plant in depoe bay doesn't sell to private boaters .
I can handle upto about 38 tuna onboard in the storage available packed on ice. Generally I take about 26-30 bags of ice for the trip. Some people prefer to take more. I've never 'run out' of ice and never have had the fish not kept cold enough, so I'm inclined to be a little on the conservative side.
My personal opinion would be to get someone with tuna experience for your empty seat on your first maiden voyage for tuna. Fishing for them is quite different than any other type of fishing you've probably ever done. While we may be 'running together' quite often as WP said, we're not usually in sight of each other unless someone gets into the fish good and calls in the fleet.
Likely I'll be leaving at 06:00am on thursday. We met up at 05:15 the other morning and it didn't get light enough till about 06:00.

Re: TUNA this week?
Ice cost is my personal nemesis. I have yet to find a reasonable source for same day ice that is at the beach or on my way. Safeway sells the 20lbs bags cheaper than the normal 7 lbs bags. I take 50 lbs of block and arouind 200 lbs of crushed/cubed ice. If anyone finds a cheap, reliable, convenient source, I am all ears! Til then, I am stuck with $30-40 a trip. :depressed: At least my fuel cost is reasonable! I really hate it when I ice up and then can't/don't get out for the tuna! Seems such a waste.
Hope to see you all on Thursday...tuna dance time, WP

Re: TUNA this week?
Ouch!
That SST does niot look so friendly! Looks like Coos Bay would be "better" than Depoe Bay. I guess that run to the north might be O.K. but the warm area is relatively small and doesn't look too dense. The break looks nice and hard though! I guess we have to live with what we get.

Re: TUNA this week?
The wind is kicked up fairly good today but the ocean isn't really THAT bad. I just came in from a brief morning cruise, and it's lumpy but not big. Things are looking fairly favorable for thursday at this point in time.
Crambone - you've got mail back.

SeaJypzee: Sounds like you might have a full boat. I would love to go out with some one who knows how to tuna fish. I'm retire and could go on short notice if you ever need someone to share expenses and fill a seat. I don't know anything about it, but really would like to go sometime. I have lots of fishing experience have my own jet sled and fish salmon, steelhead, sturgeon...but never tuna. My number is 503 657-7319 call me if you have an opening sometime......fishrite (Terry)

Re: TUNA this week?
WP - ya, that was my thinking too. It's the first real clear shot we've had of the big picture in a very long time. It's nice to see what's really happening out there.
Hopefully we'll get another couple of good shots today and tomorrow to see how it's moving, and which way. Then will be able to make a good decision on where to start the troll and which direction.

WP, Nancy and the gang
We are planning to try it again on thursday, I'm sorry that we missed all the excitement with Ray last week. Getting back to the slot in the fog was all the excitement that I could handle. Same time, same place, different crew...and I hope a different sea.. See you all there at dark thirty.

Go Skein Go!
Sounds familiar eh?
WP's correct, follow the buoys out and in. If you get to far right when leaving, you won't be happy! (bring extra shorts for this experience) Depoe is a weird place. I'm sure the locals and the experts will tell you it's a breeze, but I sure wonder how everybody misses those rocks. I've only been in and out four times and only one time was I not wondering about the ride in.
"Glass Jewels" was the term used by Edsr, after the last entrance.

Re: TUNA this week?
Skein, you are the bomb! If only all of the constant readers were so cautious. You and Bluebeast set the example for any newbie to follw.
Take Ray and follow some of the other dogs on a nice day. I appreciate your inexperience and caution. You can do this.
Think of what it was like when I followed 'Puffin' in my about half the boat you have and we got 7 TUNA!. I've never been the same since. We had almost no friends out there and I had little or no experience that far offshore. Most of the day I had my heart in my throat just from the scale of what we were doing.
Mark your route as you go out and stay in touch with your mates on the hunt. E-mail me for tips on where to go and what to use.

Re: TUNA this week?
Skein - I well understand your hesitation. I've been out 40+ miles offshore and had dense fog roll in on the beach. The last 3+ miles was solid dense fog with about 50' visibility. Had to go slow just so I could hear if any other boats were in the area and try to avoid them. Got back in and couldn't see the hole till I was literally right in it almost.
As the others have said, mark the red can (Bell Bouy) on the way out on your GPS. Also mark the hole on the GPS as well. Once you hit the red can coming back in, it's a 60 degree shot from there to the hole.
Also, I have radar on the Sea Jypzee, and even with that, the hole is so small that it doesn't show up well on it usually. But it helps when it's REAL bad for at least being able to 'see' other boats in the area. Main thing is to take it very slow coming in, and you should do fine. The only real exception to the 'slow' part is if the bar is rough...then you have to go fast enough to maintain steerage and be ahead of the wave behind you. The forcast for thursday isn't bad, so even if it's foggy the hole shot should be fairly flat and easy to navigate in. If nothing else, catch me or one of the other boats as we're coming back in and just follow us in the wake.
Ray on the Sherry Marie - Great to hear. We'll be glad to have you along. It looks like we'll have a great wolf pack out for the hunt.

Re: TUNA this week?
Okay, we're gonna try it! Mr Fisherman is going to crew with me and I have room for one more. Maybe I should start another thread in case prospective crew members aren't following this one any more.
What time are you pulling out? I want to follow you guys out and stay reasonably close while we're chasing 'em.
Color me nervous, but as the old saying goes, "A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what ships were made for."

Re: TUNA this week?
Great to hear Skein. Will be a pleasure to have ya along with us.
I'm sure there's plenty of folks around who would love to jump aboard and fill that empty seat for ya. Probably fastest to put up a new thread though, though you'll probably fill it here in this one.
Leaving time is set at 06:00. I'm having crew start showing up at 05:30. Sea Jypzee is on Dock 2 in front of the Samson Charter boat.

Re: TUNA this week?
Interesting. Doesn't look like there's much of any movement or change in water temp offshore. With the winds slowing down, and the water edges remaining stable, maybe this will allow the fish to group up again.

Godspeed Skein and Mr. Fisherman, goods luck and happy hunting. Ray, take good care of the new guy.
Nancy that blob of water is centered on the spot you favor up north on the brothers seamount. The S. edge is about where the straight out (61 degrees) seamount is.

Re: TUNA this week?
Schizo-NOAA is in full form again, with the senior forecaster Sybil at her (their) best. For about 12 hours, we were treated to the delusion that it would be 2 ft wind waves / 4 ft swell on Fri and Sat. Just long enough to imagine that it might lay down & the tuna would come up & bite like wild dingos. Now it's back to a real blow forecast.
BTW, can someone tell me if this is grass seed fire smoke in the valley, or is this forest fire smoke, all the way into the coast range? Just might go to the coast to get away from this!!

Re: TUNA this week?
Mark - Forecast as of 3:30 PM PDT on September 2, 2003
Coastal Waters From Cascade Head To Florence Oregon And Westward 60 Nm
Tonight
N wind 15 kt...easing to 10 kt after midnight. Wind waves 3 ft. NW swell 7 ft at 8 seconds.
Wed
N wind 10 kt...becoming NW 15 kt in the afternoon. Wind waves 3 ft. W swell 7 ft at 9 seconds.
Wed Night
NW wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. W swell 6 ft at 10 seconds.
Thu
NW wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. W swell 6 ft.
Thu Night
NW wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. W swell 6 ft.
Fri
W wind 15 kt. Wind waves 3 ft. W swell 5 ft.
Sat
S wind 20 kt...except S 25 kt Cascade Head to Newport. Wind waves 4 ft. SW swell 6 ft.
Sun
SW wind 20 kt. Wind waves 4 ft. SW swell 6 ft.
Actually that forcast for friday/sat/sun is a wonderful forcast for the long haul, as that West and SW wind and swell will help move that heap of warm water in closer again for next week. It might make it bad for the weekend sailors, but if it does that for a few days, it'll really help a lot IMHO.
Pilar - Yep, I noticed that as well and we may end up out there by the end of it. We fished the near edge of it saturday and it was pretty much scratch fishing for the most part. Some people were reporting jumping fish. Personally I and nobody on the Sea Jypzee ever saw anything but white caps and a giant Sea Turtle. (did see birds though, but definitly no jumpers). The forcast for thursday is looking pretty decent so far. I may just jump on out to the 61 spot, or near there and see what happens. Fish the terrain. We'll just have to see.
You should come along. We would love to have ya along for the trip.

Re: TUNA this week?
Depoe Bay's "narrow hole" is not just the bay crossing, it is also from the hole to the red can. You will want to go directly to the can and from the can to the bar. Both north and south of that channel can be rough and north has some bad kelp too. Once past the red can it gets a lot easier and after the whistler it is lovely. I am not trying to scare anyone but staying centered in that line saves a lot of underwear! Following someone the first time is great and learn to use the range markers to approach comming in is important. Ther approach line is not intuitive to me, trust the range markers!
After all that warning, I am glad you are going. We should have a ball! Feel free to follow anyone of the group. I know I would be proud to have you near and I think I speak for everyone.

Re: TUNA this week?
Nanc...(is that too familiar, dropping the 'Y' ?) yea, perhaps I overstated it as a "real blow" for Friday anyway, but 25 knots of southerly aint too good..if it really does blow like that. I agree though, at least it's coming from a better "warming" direction. Blow them fishies towards the beach! Like many others, I am just so ready for the autumn flat-calm-wide-open-bite to arrive. I'm very close to going into withdrawl, so I just ordered 7 or 8 new megabait iron jigs. Buying more gear is such a temporary fix though...gotta have the real thing real soon. And they are just clobbering the tuna off of central CA (Santa Cruz / Half Moon / SF). Charter boats averaging over 100 fish a day, private boats getting all they want. Don't make me drive down there!

Re: TUNA this week?
Thanks for the tips. I remember the line from when we went out with Gregotis, and how the markers didn't seem intuitive but were spot on. I also have gps numbers for a route out of Depoe, but I think I'll let my crew mark the waypoints on my backup handheld just in case.
I remember it's channel 80 for slot traffic, and the drill is to say something like, "Depoe Bay traffic, I am a 23' sport fisherman outbound from Depoe Bay." and listen for a "conflict of interest." Same thing coming in except announce myself outside a ways and be ready to wait.
The S-turn coming through the channel is the part I really am unsure about. You know, how close to hug either side. I suspect I'm not so big that I have to worry, but still I need to zig and zag.
I remember going to the rockpile with no wingman, and how that was one step for me. This will be another.

Re: TUNA this week?
Well, I just lost my first mate! He has to work so I am out of taking my boat out. Talk about dissappointing! I was really looking forward to taking my boat out and putting in a new gas tank for extra fuel and the whole deal. I have approx. $200 dollars worth of tuna gear burning a hole in my hull! I wanted to get your guys input on my handlines, etc. Oh well, I guess I will have to wait until some other time to go. Good luck and have fun! Thanks for all the help and info.

Re: TUNA this week?
Welp, I'm trying to gather up enough courage to join you guys on Thursday. The boat is performing great, but I haven't been further than the rockpile and I haven't gone out of Dopey. Frankly I'm pretty uncomfortable with the fog probability - dat's a tiny little slot in the Big Rocks.
I've about got Mr Fisherman talked into going along, and if I could talk someone else into going, someone with DEPOE BAY EXPERIENCE, I might just do it.
Sorry if I sound timid. I'm not really, but just because I have a neat boat doesn't make me king of the ocean.

Re: TUNA this week?
WP,
On your way through Corvallis you will see what used to be a Dari-Mart just west of 53rd street (Bi-Mart). You can get crushed ice there cheap --They let you back into their storeroom and you can fill coolers for between $1.50 and $3.
Good luck to all the 'Dogs this week. I have been out of commission for a while (work), but I'm back on Saturday and Sunday -- Depoe is the plan.
Skein, you'll love the blast through the hole -- awesome on a flat day.

Re: TUNA this week?
heavy fog and rough seas make Depoe uncomfortable...at least a little! Mark the bouies and the slot on your GPS as you pass them and plot a route from them. It helps come in "on line" and takes some of the unknown out of it. The fog has never been so dense that I couldn't see to enter the slot safely but that doesn't mean it never gets that way! If you return and find it unsafe, the coasties will come out and escort you through the gap. They have loads of experience and great radar. I have not done this but I know of others who have. Usually the coasties like it that you are being cautious in bad conditions. The fog that Ray got towed in was the worst I have seen it at the entrance...so far. I hope you can make it out with us!

Re: TUNA this week?
Skein, there's nothing wrong with being timid. If you do not feel comfortable, don't go. How's the new boat? I have been away from the computer for the last 10 days and am not up on whats going on. Have you been out for tuna yet? I am waiting for them to get in closer so I can take my boat out. I don't feel comfortable going out 30 miles and trolling at 9-10 knots for a couple of hours. My fuel supply would be getting short by the time I got back.
The weather at Astoria was pretty rough so I didn't go out as much as I planned. B10 is such a zoo, I would rather go out to the CR and catch fish than fight the crowd.

RnR - What about seeing if anyone here has an open seat you could jump on, or maybe post your open seat on your own boat and take someone else? There's lots of experienced folks around here I'm sure would love a chance to get out there.
Skein - I tend to just stay right center of the channel on the way out and have never had a problem. I'm sure Sea Jypzee draws a lot more water than your boat does.

Re: TUNA this week?
Jim, getting out is easy, just stay mid channel, it is self explanitory. Coming in is even easier... Just follow the Coast Guard Cutter towing you Err... o.k., maybe that isn't the best plan but that is the only way I've done it so far.
Funny thing about that... They will tow you in but they won't tow you out to fish... Go figure...

Re: TUNA this week?
I'm thinking about bringing my motorhome down.
Does anyone need a place to stay?
Would I get much flack if I parked at the ramp for the night then moved to the other side in the morning?
I'd be willing to pay a launch fee even If I don't get it wet

Re: TUNA this week?
Alright, I am back up and running! I have my other friend with experience on my bat out to help on Thursday! I think this is set in stone now so if there is someone with experience in the Tuna Industry looking for a low paying, fast paced job, I have a position for you for one day on Thursday. E-mail me and jump aboard! One seat open on my boat out of Depot Bay on Thursday. I am leaving from Tigard at 3:00 am thursday morning. If you are in this area I can make room in the truck for you all I require is splitting fuel, A foot massage on the way to and from the coast, maybe a backrub while we are at sea (don't want the captain under stress do you?), and no banannas in your lunch box! See that isn't much to ask for now is it?
On second thought, I am going to be running errands today so here is my cell phone number 503-313-3481. Sorry for making this such short notice.

This feels really strange!! Jim is on his way to Depoe, as I write, to get ready for an early morning TUNA trip in "Our" boat ....without ME! :depressed:
I'm glad he's taking an "experienced" fisherman along, but I wish I could go too....
Oh well, my turn will come. Good Luch everyone!
Have a safe and successful trip!!
