Re: please help me
I would take a look at the Savage Weather Warrior Series. Very accurate, great trigger, and not a bad price. Some people may talk down about Savage about how they were in the past. If you look up current reviews; you will find great things about Savage. I spent a lot of time looking all over the internet at reviews and came up with Savage as my top pick that was at a descent price. If you are willing to pay the price there are better guns out there.

Give the new model 70 a try, or the ruger hawkeye, both very nice rifles.

Re: please help me
I would suggest that you look at this for the best deal I've seen on IFISH in a while -
Remington Model 700 BDL - 7mm Rem Mag w/ Simmons Scope and Ammo
The 7mag is a superior cartridge to the 30.06 and has little, if any, more recoil. It's powerful enough to hunt any North American game and yet can be loaded down for recreational shooting. This combination would be a great "first rifle" and will last a long time. Plus, Beardbuster is a straight shooter and wouldn't sell you a piece of junk.

Re: please help me
I agree with the comments stated above -- with that said, I paid less than half what the going rate for Rem 700's are going for in a 1903 Springfield and I love it. Accurate, rugged, great action, so that's a thought -- watch out for lower serial numbers on them there were some issues with receiver brittleness.

Re: please help me
The basic 30-06 is the most popular caliber for a good reason. It is very reliable and can be used for just about any big or small game.
I used to shoot my old 03-A3 on the 1000 yard matches and it worked fine.
We use 110 grain for coyotes at 400 yards.
And we use 180 grain factory loads for deer and elk because we can all trade ammo without worry. I used to use really hot handloads but gave that up after I missed an elk when my hot ammo sheared off the bullet shoulder and the autoloader I had borrowed jammed.
Bottom line - any solid bolt action 30-06 will serve you very well.

Browning A-Bolt II 30-.06 with a BOSS is what I shoot. I hunt deer and elk with one rifle and this is it. Hornaday 165gr. Light Magnum...the gun is a tack driver! I have a Leup. Vari-X III 3.5-10 on it. When I bought this gun I had no budget. I was going to buy the gun that felt the best to me and this was the one! My dad now shoots one now as well and he loves it too. I don't think I will ever buy another gun. The BOSS reduces the recoil by ~40% and makes it really fun to shoot.

Re: please help me
CL,
I would have to disagree that there is no difference in recoil in the 30-06 and 7MM mag. I have shot a Ruger 7MM pushing 170-175 grain bullets that had noticeable more recoil than a Rem 700 in 30-06 to me.
I also do not see the 7MM as superior to the 30-06, but just my opinion also. The 7MM Mag is a fine caliber. ( but I prefer my 7MM-08)
I don't mean to argue with you, just have a different opinion on the recoil.

Re: please help me
Looking at the rifle recoil table, it says the 7MM and 30.06 are within 1 - 2lb's of recoil from each other, certainly not enough difference to change caliber preferences.
Also, if people would post why they like a particular gun rather then post just a name and manufacturer, this could help people make informed decisions.
I'm curious why people like the Weatherby Vanguard; other then price point, what makes this a good rifle?

Re: please help me
Is this your 1st rifle? What other brands do you own? If, yes...what do you like about them and what don't you like?
Asking a loaded question like what brand .30-06 should I buy is about like asking what brand truck should I buy.
The answer depends on the person and THEIR likes and dislikes.
Also.....new or used?
For new, you have to ask the question WHO is putting the best barrels on their current production rifles.
Right now Browning, Sako, & Savage seem to be the leaders.
So I wouldn't talk anyone out of an A-Bolt, Tikka T3, or Savage.
Not saying you shouldn't look at others, but those are my top picks today.
I also like the older Rem700's...the square safety ones from the 60-70's. Awesomely accurate rifles from that era. Heck even an old Rem721 that has been cared for is a great rifle for the $$. I have an old 722 .300Sav that shoots very well.
Personally I like Browning A-Bolts. Awesome factory barrels, nice tang safety and I really like the swing out box mag for loading/unloading conveinence. And it makes topping off the mag super simple when on the run after the shot. No fumbling w/ shells and no need to unchamber just to top it off. Yes, I know....who cares? You only should be shooting one round. True, but when todays big ultra mags only hold 3, best top it off ASAP after the shot. Don't know what your always going to find when you get closer. It may still actually be on it's feet. Anyway, it's a little feature I like that saves time on the run & minimizes fumbling of shells.
Cost also has an influence. How much do you have to spend?
IMO, Get stainless if you buy new.
Are you opposed to buying a used rifle for action price and rebarreling?
Many times you can break even on the cost over new and get a much more accurate rifle in the end.
More info required.....

Re: please help me
A 308 would fit the bill as well for any hunting in Oregon. Another gun that is not too expensive but is supposed to be very accurate is a Tika they were selling new for like $550 last summer.

Re: please help me
Bolt action. Give them all a test. To the shoulder, how does it feel. One will stand out as a good fit. They are all cut a little different. My old Rem 700 ADL was like a glove, but the airlines lost it for me. New 700's just didn't feel right, found a Ruger that balanced great for me and went with it. If it dosn't fit, don't committ, keep looking. I prefer barrel heavy rifles, easier to hold steady. Light rifles are nice to carry but I have a terrible time shooting them. Just find something that fits you, you will know when you pick it up. My .

The Weatherby Vanguard for the money I think is the best gun out there they guarantee that it will shot a group of 3 under a inch and with a price tag of under $500 that's hard to beat this is from there website SUB-MOA Guaranteed to shoot a 3-shot group of .99" or less when used with specified factory or premium ammunition, best of luck

Right on the money here.
Only way to find "your" rifle is to pick up a bunch and shoulder them. It is a whole lot better to have a rifle that fits you than have one that impresses the neighbor.
Go to a few pawn shops and feel the rifles for yourself and then decide. Don't make a decision on what any scope that happens to be on a rifle just judge them on how they fit you on the shoulder. You can put any scope you want on any gun after you find yours.

Re: please help me
The Savage and the Weatherby Vanguard are running about $400 and I don't think you could go wrong with these. Another very interesting new gun out there is the I Bolt (Smith and Wesson I believe). It has the same barrel as the TC and they are running about $350...worth looking at.

No worries Camohunter, "felt recoil" can depend on a lot of factors. I mentioned the Remington 7mag from the classifieds as a good option because it is. In comparable bullet weights the 7 mag is faster, flatter and retains more energy than the venerable '06. Besides, I didn't see any complete 30.06 bolt action rifle/scope combos of comparable quality posted in the classifieds...
