Re: coyote hunting
I've varmint hunted for over 30 years, and I think that if you're just starting out you couldn't have picked a much better cartridge. Flat, plenty powerful, little recoil, not that tough to reload, if you do that, a coyoter's best friend. I use either a .220 Swift or a .223. There are a lot more coyotes around than you might realize, and lots of 'em not too far away from major cities--if not in 'em. I've taken the majority of mine either in Jackson county or around here in Umatilla county. You never know--could be a bobcat or fox shows up, so have all the paperwork done to bag those. Were I in your shoes I'd use the electronic caller placed several yards from myself, get my camo'd self (including hands and face) semi-covered by brush, try to eliminate any odors from myself, KEEP THE WIND IN MY FACE, hold still for about 20 minutes per location, have a bipod to shoot with, start with rabbit squeals or pup or kitten sounds, and keep your bulbs peeled--you may not have too long to shoot. You could also have a 12 gauge full of #4 buck handy in case they show up at close range outta nowhere. Hope this helps enough to get ya some fur down! And watch out--they are awful suspicious at times!!
