Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Yes, it's true Keta has once again taken up his killing spree. He joined Greg (DriftR), and Tom (sturgeon Tom) and I aboard the Sea Jypzee for an adventure into the fog off of Depoe Bay.
We left Depoe this morning at about 06:00am and headed offshore in search of the ever elusive albacore.
The ocean was a little concern due to the high wind forcast for this afternoon, and a lumpy ocean on the way out, but we persued onward and outward. Made about 10kts on the way out, and got out to about the 45 02 124 20 area and put the gear out to begin fishing. The water was still fairly green and cold at about 56 degrees, but since we were only making tuna troll speed anyway, we figured it wouldn't hurt to have the gear in the water.
We got our first fish on about an hour later, around 124 30 and 45 03 or so, and thus began Keta's killing spree. About the time we got the first fish into the boat, a second one decided to jump on another hand line and the fun continued. Blood was soon splattered all over my nice and shiny boat, and Keta looked like he was in hog heaven.
The fish were really fairly scattered until we got a report via radio from the Blitz who was in jumpers inside and south of us, so we and the charter boat Enterprise both made the turn into that general direction. Soon, we were into the fish, and Enterprise and the Blitz were both in sight, along with Black Rocket, and a commercial troller.
I never did see any jumpers, or fish on the surface. All I saw was white caps, but it sounds like Dave on Enterprise and guys on the Blitz were seeing them.
We managed to end the day with a final count of 8 Albacore, and got Sturgeon Tom initiated into the club of the Tuna Aflicted. In other words, I've deflowered another tuna virgin.

DepoebayDan met us at the dock and has some more pictures he'll email to me later to post. We were also met by Woody and his wife. Thanks guys for the carking help. Much appreciated.
I was planning on taking Crambone and crew out tomorrow, however the Depoe Bay Fuel dock was not open  on our return and I need to gas the boat up before making another trip. We'll get out there when the weather gets better again anyway, Tim.

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Yo pic's are there (as long as I sent them to the right Nancy)! I'll prewarn you that it's hard to compare pic's on land with the ones taken out at sea.
But there is a group pic or two to pick from or Woody supervising the carking.
Good job! I really didn't think you would be able to pull it off today but sounds like it was better offshore than here on the beach.
Boy it's blowing like a son of a gun here now!

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Got the pics. Thanks Dan. Yes, it was better offshore than it is here on the beach. I was just letting the dog out, and yep, it's blowing pretty good.
Here is Keta doing his master work. Proof that he's killed again.
Here is the full crew for today:
Left to right:
Greg, Tom, Nancy and Keta. A couple of fish had already been loaded up, so not showing the full catch.

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Way to go guys and Nancy! I wish I had been there with you...but my guwess is that I would have whimped out anyway. Nancy, do you have numbers for the area that the Blitz was getting jumpers? If the weather takes a turn for the better, I will try again Thursday or Friday (Wednesday too but that is a bit of a stretch!) Thanks and congrates...WP

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Ya WP, we all met up in the same general area. We got our last 4 fish there. Never did see any jumpers. Saw lots of white caps.
44 57 - 44 58 and 124 27 - 124 32 was the general area. Looking at last evenings SST, the warmer water was actually out further where we were heading originally, around 124 40. I don't have a working temp on my sounder, so can't give ya a good report on the actual temps.
It looks like things are going to be settling down by mid week, so maybe you'll have better conditions.

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Thank you Nancy, for taking Lee fishing. I've been craving fresh TUNA and unable to chase my own.
Thank you Keta for the loins. One is marinating now.

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Keta - It was a pleasure having you along. You really know how to handle those fish well.
All 3 of you did an awesome job yesterday and stuck it out with less than ideal ocean conditions. Well done.
Woody - Was great seeing you out here again. Hopefully we'll get a chance to get ya back out after tuna again this year. It's not that uncommon for them to remain within range clear into October, so we've still got some time.
Fishplay - I'm glad that you got to enjoy some fresh tuna.
AuntyM - Can you believe that? I hear he's shared his loins all up and down the coast.

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Thank you Nancy for a fun and successful trip for Albies on Saturday. Seeing that sea turtle was a real plus. It was a tad snarly going out but as the day progressed things got much better. That was a good day of albie scoring in my log book for sure.
Keta, your ability with the knife is second to none for prepping those albies aboard ship.
Tom, Remember, sea sickness can happen to anyone at any time. But you scored your first albie so that made it all worthwhile.
FUN DAY.

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Nancy, nice trip. Thanks for sharing your story and your boat with the new guys. We will all have much to talk about this winter at the Tunaholics anonymous meetings. And thank you for the cell phone report although ultimately I ran out of boat and was unable to brave the conditions and take advantage of it.
I love the new guys. It is always the same. The thousand yard stare, the snowblind declaration of undying love for AL and the search for a bigger boat which begins immediatly after the first trip.
You guys keep this up. It is for me the finest thing. Warping minds and influencing fishers to come over to the dark side.
Muh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Another soul lost to the dark side.
Congrats, SturgeonTom and good luck with your new addiction. We have meetings for addicts all winter. Trouble is we don't morally sanction, like AA ... we enable.

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Greg - Yes, that giant turtle was one of the fantastic things about being out there like that. I've never seen one offshore out in the wild like that. It was absolutly beautiful and one of the big reasons that I love the ocean so much and living near it.
Pilar - Poor Tom. If he only knew what he was getting himself into. I just love taking new people out and getting them into fish for the first time. I mean, just look what I've done to Wildhawg. I took his TUNA virginity and look how he's turned out.

Sounds like a fun trip!
Looks like I finally get that Mass Tuna Murderer back on Miss B this Saturday. Minaki (Kamloops) keeps stealing him.
See ya Friday Keta!

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
Pilar yes I am addicted. That was an incredible trip. I had so much fun and learned so much. I love to learn new things, especially things that are so exciting.
The turtle was something to see. I have seen them on TV but out in the ocean in the wild. That is something that a lot of people will never get to see. We are so lucky to live here.
You guys can enable me anytime you have room in a boat. I am almost always available.
Am I hooked or what.
Nancy you did this to me. You should be proud of yourself.

Re: Witnesses tell of Keta killing again
You are ruined Tom. Kokanee will never make the grade now. That's why I will not fish for tuna; it would ruin my high lakes fishing.
