Default Plug cut vs RSK

Does anyone know of a good page that shows how to plug cut or pictures that I can send to a buddy of mine. Or should they buy some of those RSK's

Thanks Saltys.

RSKs take all the "art" out of bait fishing....but they work like a hot damn!

Pro Cure has a tech sheet as well as a jig for the perfect cut.
Look for it at your favorite tackle store...
I hope this helps...

I just use a knife or an RSK. I am partial to the RSK myself but have caught lots of fish on Plug Cut and also whole Herring after I was taught how to half hitch the noses to get the desired spin.

Tight lines...

I can show you how to get a killer roll on a whole herring with a 2 hook rig with a slider.
It has produced as well or better in my tests quite consistently when compared to RSK's and plug cuts in the open ocean. I save the plug cuts for the rivers.
You need to get a Plugcutter from Procure--makes plugcutting foolproof. Make a 'V' around the anus, pull out the guts, and take your knife and brake the bloodvein (kidney).
I like to inject with scents as well. This rigging is said to produce a bubble trail which induces a bite.
For rigging advice, get the tech guide! I am challenged when it comes to technical descriptions

You can get the same roll with a fixed hook rig.

Rotary Salmon Killer, a device that holds the herring by the head and with a rudder gives a consistent spin to it.

Thanks Wildhawg  would love to see it some day.... This weekend at the CR???

 Now for RSK is the a wrong way of hooking it up or does it not matter which way the RSK faces in relation to the fish or do they only go on one way... Thanks Sounds like the ProCure jig works well also...

Sounds like a toss up

I'm hip on using RSK's when ocean fishing. The action gets so fast and you want to get your bait in the water as fast as you can. Plus, it seems in the big blue, the salmon, esp. coho, will hit about anything.

But, to be honset, I just learned how to rig a cut plug from a "The Guides Forcast" tech report. It caught some fatty chinook at B10 this year and it feels like I'm adding some "art" to my fishing.

Thanks again everybody  We tried an RSK today against a whole herring. The RSK fished in the middle behind a diver and dicver fish flash and whole herring on the outside rods and the RSK gets the first hit KEEPER, but the next 2 were on the left outside rod with medium red eye fish flash Then one more on the RSK real hard strikes and one miss. Looks like a tie.... Need to get a good plug cutter fisherman to go up against this green RSK

Coho will hit a piece of balogna stuck on a hook. Not exactly a sophisticated critter, at least not in the ocean.

The wire-in-the-nose, half hitch operation (supposed to be a carrot milk secret) puts the nicest wounded-herring spin I've ever seen...pretty awesome...

Thumper, how do you get a consistent roll with Bologna? I can't do it, maybe I'm rigging it wrong. Hot dogs work better.

Bill,

Is the "wire-in-the-nose" operation the same as the "toothpick-in-the-nose-super-twirl-deluxe" technique?

I've yet to learn that one...or I've yet to learn two....

I too have used the wire/toothpick and halfhitch techniques,
It really depends on how long you plan to troll before you get bit or re-bait.
My roll on a whole herring holds up well on a long troll with no hardware, and seems to get bit just as much or more. I have experienced very few long unproductive trolls this year though , as I have been blessed to be on top of some PHENOMENAL Chinook bites.
In this situation, I want another harring on the bottom PRONTO, and my quickee roll just kills 'em.
I can be fishing in 10 seconds--literally. RSK's, wire, halfhitching, plugcutting--all take too much time in a hot bite.
As stated above--I like RSK's and the wire/halfhitch for river fish (especially springers), but find they are a waste of time USUALLY in the ocean.
Versatility is the key, and being able to switchup as conditions dictate will increase your catch...I guaranty it!!
Anybody out there that doesn't believe me? I would be glad to outfish you and share the secrets to my success!!!!!

Art ... shhmmmmart.

RSKs allow you to bait quickly and also will continue to fish after a driveby. They keep spinning and the fish will come back for another whack at the bait. All you have to do is free spool for a count of 3 and then slam the bail shut and hang on. Just about any other bait rig will not survive a strike and keep spinning. This is important when you are mooching at 200 feet. A day of bait checks will reduce your bottom time by a lot.

Wet hooks catch more fish.

Having said that ... Plug cut works on the Tillamook pigs in the ocean better than most anything else.

The whole bait 1/2 hitch is pretty fast too. But it comes unbuttoned after any kind of strike.

Save a bunch of money by buying RSKs in bulk packs of 100 at Englunds for $88. This compares with $3.59 for the prerigged ones. I throw away the leader and funny looking hook anyway so it feels like I am getting ripped off when I buy the single packs. If you split the $88 bucks with some buddies you can spend the difference on TUNA! gear.

Muh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

On this page is a video where Tony Floor shows his method of hooking-up a cut-plug:

WDFW PAGE

Personally, I do a whole herring/fixed hook/toothpick thing that takes about 2 seconds and is fully adjustable. I learned it in Sitka a few years back and I doubt that I'll ever cuat a herring again.
