Default Salt Guns... the good, the bad, and the very UGLY

I've been very, very hard on my salt gun these last few weeks. Very hard. I also did not stay up on my daily care and feeding of it. This is why I call her "Big Red". She still works like a charm too... but it's time for some steel wool me thinks...

Let's see your "ugly gun" pictures!

Wow, that's a new camo pattern I've never seen before.....

Honestly, it looks like you left your gun in your private blind for the year and went back to retrieve it yesterday. That's RUSTED!

Go get some Eezox and see how much you can bring back with out steel wool. This product has removed lots of rust for me and even leaves a coating layer for future abuse.

I don't know...if you say it works well, I don't know why you'd want to get rid of what looks to me like a pretty well camo'd shotgun. If your sighting area is unobstructed I'd leave it be. (I spend $$ on camo tape but don't think it blends in much better than your gun does.) Your choice, of course, and if you want it gone that EEZOX stuff'll do ya as well as anything else I know of.

Geoff,
That's unsafe, please be careful. What does your barrell look like? Wads will jam up on rust.
Embarrassingly, it's happened to me after I left my 870 in a floating case for a week with out cleaning. Fortunately, the blow back was so strong I did not continue firing on the jammed wad and stopped to investigate what happened. There was enough rust after one trip at the coast not running a boresnake through the barrel to stop the load

Who knows what one more shell would have done?

John

Duck guns get wet, they get dirty, sometimes they even get dropped, used as an oar, or something else, it comes with the territory.
Duck hunt a few times, and you'll learn a little rust won't hurt it.
A duck gun need not be pretty, it only has one job, and thats to go "BOOM, BOOM, BOOM".

I second that. I would not fire that gun. Nor would I stand next to someone shooting it.

Unless the internal parts of the gun are free of rust and in good working condition, your gun may be unsafe to use. A rusted trigger or firing pin may cause delayed firing. You can imagine what sort of danger is involved if you pull the trigger and nothing happens for a few seconds. The firing pin spring may also be rusted to a point where it may break, which could ruin a good day in the field! Remember rule #1...safety always comes first.

Yep I call my old gun rusty but it has never gotten that bad. Close though all my friends tease me about it.

If my gun wasn't factory painted, I'd have an identical. To me as long as it fires it does the job. Hasn't been cleaned in 2 years...not lazy, just don't care and and keeps working excellent.

I was thinking the same thing. If the outside looks like that, what does the INSIDE look like? A FULL disassembly, inspection and Eezox is in order before it should be used again IMHO.

Having said that, I'll bet it can be saved, it's an 870 express!!!

They have this new stuff you put on your gun after you get done hunting and it has some sort of rust preventative solution in it, but I forget what it is called.
