CWA West Coast Pintail Population Study
I recently shared some emails with California Waterfowl Association member regarding a west coast pintail study they are conducting to determine whether a more liberal bag limit should be instituted for our flyway. Most of us see huge numbers of Sprig from time to time in both East and West of Hebo, and wonder why the heck we are stuck on one per day, year after year. The goal of the study would be to determine if harvesting more would effect the overall contintental popualtion in a negative way. Most would agree that based on field observations, taking one or two more drakes in the daily bag limit is unlikely to have much of a detrimental imapct on the species, but we don't have the data to back it up. This CWA fellow said in an October airial count over 900,000 birds were spotted in the Sacramento Complex alone. I'll post more information regarding the study when I get it, and it would be worth a small donation from those of us who want to see more done on this issue. If anyone else knows more about this study, please chime in.
