Question Egg Riggin'?

I bought some egg imitations at a fly shop in So. Or and I need a little help as to how they are rigged up. These are the single egg like imitation that has the hole through the middle aka bead. I know that the rainbow fishermen in AK rig these with a trailer/dropped hook. Anyone have a link or description?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Most people peg them about 2" above the hook with a toothpick but I do it a little differently thanks to some insight from a friend... I place the bead on the line, tie on my hook and then I tie a nail knot with 20lb mono onto the leader below the bead and about 2" above the hook. I cut the tag end off closest to the hook but leave the tag end about 1/4" long on the upper end of the knot. The tag end keeps the bead from sliding over the nail knot. It works really good. Every fish I caught this year has been in the mouth also. I have also found that if you slide the nail knot into the bead as well, the bead pretty much stays pegged.

This variation is a little more durable as a toothpick can get water logged and fail on you.

I'll see if I can use my MS Paint skills to draw a picture and post it later.

Edit: Here's my lame attempt at a diagram

i would use a toothpick, grab one or two from the restaurant everytime you go and if it fails just re-peg. in a whole summers fishing trout in AK i probably only used 15 toothpicks, i didn't really have a big problem with them failing...if they do and you run out, just grab a twig from the bank. also, in terms of how far up to peg the bead, err on the side of the hook, the more distance you have between the bead and the hook the better the chance that you'll eye hook a fish. this is especially true with smolts (which you will hook) and we all know they are at a big enough disadvantage without losing an eye before getting to the ocean!

Remember, if you are pegging the egg above the hook, it is not a fly. Fishing it this way will get you a citation if fishing in "fly only" waters in Oregon and Washington.

Hell, that's way better and faster than my nail knot... Thanks Andy!

This is how I rig mine as well. I pre-rig them, but even if you do it streamside, it only takes a few seconds to tie up.
