HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
8:02 P.M.
My dog just licked a little Tuna Blood......
Does anyone know if Tuna Blood is dangerous to dogs? Does Tuna Blood have the parasitic fluke that is in salmon blood?

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
First rule in all emergencies--don't panic. I'll find out if tuna is a problem for sure, but I don't think so.
"Salmon poisoning", which is not restricted to salmon at all, is contracted in fresh water. I am not sure if their are any flukes that are salt born, but I sure haven't heard of any.
Watch your dog. If it loses it's appetite or desire to drink, head to the vet.
With salmon, this usually takes a few days, so be vigilant.
My gut instinct is your ok--but don't believe me! Keep an eye out.

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
Salmon poisoning was discussed here in the past...use the search feature. I do believe however.....that the parasite is less likely in fish directly out of the salt water. It is acquired as the fish ( salmon, steelhead, sea-going trout) enter fresh water.

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
Honestly not sure if my own dog has had salmon poisoning. I got her as an adult. But she's eaten raw tuna and enjoys it as much as I do.
Tuna doesn't have the same problem that Salmon does to dogs.

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
Never heard of a problem with tuna. I think Wild Hawg just wants to confiscate all your tuna.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Actually non sea-going trout can have the parisite also. My dog got it from eating trout (stocked rainbows) guts in the water at Big Creek Resevoir.
As explained to me by the vet all salmonids in this country (area) can have it and it comes from a fresh water snell that carries the parasite and then is ingested by the salmonids.
Once your dog gets it it rarely gets it again. My dog got it about 4 years ago and he is around salmon all the time and has never got it again.
Also the vet said that their are some documented cases of dogs getting salmon poisoning from salmon out of the salt but is rare.
Be my guess that ocasionally a salmonid smolt ingest the snail before it migrates to the ocean.

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
This should be all you need to know.
salmon poisoning
Every dog I've had, I've deliberately introduced it to fall chinook. I know this sounds mean, but I like to think of it as a "controlled exposure". This way, you know it's coming. The last thing you want is the dog getting sick the day after you've left for a week long hunting trip and the wife neglects to notice, or just thinks the dog is down-in-the-dumps over you being gone...
In most cases, the dog won't get it a second time. Mine never have.

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
By the way, the vet has never put my dogs on an IV...they just send me home with some antibiotics. I've never seen my dogs suffer very bad. Mostly just listless for a few days.
I did lose a dog to this once a long time ago. I didn't know what was wrong, figured it would tough it out. I was so wrong. This poor dog died one miserable death. Someone should have kicked me in the head for that...but I was young and had other priorities to spend my hard earned cash on...if you know what I mean.

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
Thanks for the information!!!
I got into some great tuna action 43 miles out, SW of the CR Bouy yesterday. Two Albacore went close to 35 pounds! I have been gutting and gilling the tuna and cooling them down in the saltwater before icing them.....they seem to cool down a lot faster without melting the ice so fast.

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
The vet told me that the salmon contract the flukes on the way to the ocean and carry them their entire life cycle. If he is correct, unless your tuna have been in fresh water, you will have no problem.

Re: HELP! DOG ATE TUNA BLOOD
Deepline,
Go over an pet that dog on the head. Rub its ears and scratch its favorite spot. Still miss my dog since I lost her to cancer after 14+ years back in Feb. of this year. Enjoy them and treat them like family and they return the favor always.
