Hello to all
hello to all
I have been reading the board for a couple weeks now and I'll try to jump in.
I see on the NOAA sea surface temp map that the 60deg water has moved all the way to the mouth of the CR, Is there any possibility of catching tuna in this water? I would realy like to catch some but my boat is a little short on range
thanks

Re: Hello to all
Hi Fox and welcome to the Salty Dogs.
As you read through the threads here, you'll find people who've been catching TUNA offshore from the columbia, so yes they can be had.

Re: Hello to all
Fox,
You can even read it on this thread!
Our 2 boat flotilla picked up one TUNA! while mooching whole herring a week ago, 2-4 miles SW of the CR buoy.
The TUNA! was quite a suprise and a welcome bonus!!!

Re: Hello to all
They were found at 20 to 23 miles last Saturday off CR buoy. The week before we got them in at 14 miles as we trolled home and this recent trip at 17. However, with the NW wind blowing they may be out a little further. It looks like Mel and Kamloops hit them hard a little further out on the Astoria Canyon. It may be the combination of the canyon with warm water as much as anything. All those canyons and ridges are what are probably holding the fish, in combination with the blue water. The last three trips we lose the blue water about 14 miles out.

Re: Hello to all
Hey fox, give us a story man! It's an Ifish tradition to make an introductory story so we can get to know you.
What's your boat, where do you fish, give us some details.
Welcome aboard and be careful getting into the tuna frenzy, there's no going back!!!!

Re: Hello to all
hey all
it seems that i've left some thing out so here we go, a story my bigest fish. Whene I waas 15 or16 I worked on a small charter boat out of Astoria(32'steele hull twin screw). I realy did'nt know much about fishing in the ocean. I had always fished the upper clackamas for hatchery trout,so when I was on the ocean every thing was pretty new to me. one day we were trolling along when i saw some thing strange in the water. So being 15or16 I jump down from the fly bridge and grab a net and lean over the side to net this thing. One huge fin got in the net but not mach else. sience the boat was under power i could'nt back the net off the fin when i realy saw haw big this thing was. But it was slowly spining, the net handle was slowly bending, all the fishers were leaning over the same side of the boat ,the capt. was coming out of the cabin. Finaly the net broke and the fish was free. The capt.says"stop playing with the sunfish now you owe me a new net".
Estaments from the fishers is that this fish would be in the 300# range
"Youth is wasted on the young"
My boat is a 19' Fiber form hard top it is a old boat but very stable and sound.I have had it for just 1 year. It needs a total interior remodal but I will get to that later wheh I have a good place to do it.It has a 165hp engine and I have been adding things to make it a better fishing boat.
Most of my fishing has been for trout on the earstern ore. rivers.I have been wanting to have a boat for a long time so I could expand my fishing options. Now I do so I need to learn a lot.
I hope this lets you all know who I am and what I am about.

Re: Hello to all
You've come to the right place Fox!! Welcome to ifish. You are sure to find an answer to most questions here--from CR tuna, to how to properly outfit your boat for ocean adventures. There is alot more to fishin' the salt than a boat, bait, and a rod. Ask and yr shall receive Brother!
Now leave those sunfish alone .

Re: Hello to all
The TUNA! addicition is a bad one. Welcome and be careful. You'll never see hatchery trout the same way.

Re: Hello to all
Run while you can!!! Next thing you know, your boat is going to be to small (requiring the purchase of a bigger and more costly one) and lots exspensive gear is ends up in the tackle box waiting for the ocean to flatten out. Welcome.

Re: Hello to all
Welcome to the board! Great to see someone else with an older Fiberform. I have a 21 ft. with the same 165 hp. motor. I have the service manual's for these motors but not much exposere to the complexities of marine mechanics.
Anything you experince in or out of the salt let me know, I may be able to relate, give you a clue plus get some insight myself
