Default 2008 Coos County Elk Success (kill shot video link added)

I wanted to give a small report of the family elk seasons we had in the Tioga unit. It started off with my cousin getting this one sided bull in archery season

Then my other cousin lobbed an arrow at this monster rosie getting himself in the record books

Here is the rack in his pickup a little later

Then rifle season came along and on opening morning I smoked this nice rosie

Here is another shot of the rack in my living room

Then on the last day of our Tioga 1 season, my other cousin went ahead and got this one....

It took us quite a while to get him out. Here is a picture of how we did it.

Now we are in the process of smoking massive batches of jerky and frying up steaks enjoying our share of the Tioga Unit.

Sorry for not having all the details, but there are a lot. The one in the water was to get it from public land back to our place. Shortest route was water. Towed it with a canoe. Every three strokes was about a foot of gain in the water. Since we had never attempted to "float" an elk, we actually lost it once when it was originally heaved into the water. He sank to the bottom. Recovery was tough. Come to find out later from some expert advice, you have to leave the guts in for them to float. That is why we had to put two PFD's on him to get him to tow.

Never thought of that but it makes sense. Glad you didn't lose him. Congrats.

I found that out with my deer from south dakota this year. I shot him on the other side of a river and I had to go across in bear feet to get him and drag across. I asked my buddy if he thought it would float and he sarcastically replied: "yeah, dead whitetails float like corks"

Sure enough though, it floated.

That's a sweet pic with life jackets on the elk.

I wish I could use them myself!!!! I think it would be awesome if i could get my boss to drop me and my gear off in the middle of some elk heaven and pick me up a week later. Snake river would be good..... The hike from the river to the good areas kicks my @$$ and the helicopters would be a good headstart.

Here is a link to the killshot that was filmed from 980 yards. Sorry for the quality of the video, but you will get the idea. The elk was shot in center neck at 75 yards. Put it this way- the camera is pointing north and the gun was pointing southeast. The sound delay in the shot is great. Hope this link works.

How ironic. Filmed @ less than 1000 yards but shot at less than 100 yards.

What I liked best was that there was no music dubbed in to the video. Boom and down goes the bull. Happy hunting video.

With Youtube hunting is going to either be vilonized or idealized. I'll stick to taking still shots for now.
