Re: PIG HUNTING in OR
Where are all these rumors coming from? I've been asked about the pig hunting over here a bunch and it's really not here anymore, hasn't been for a bunch of years.

Wish I was in with them. I'm down to one ham, and one shoulder roast from the boar I took in Oklahoma, and that is getting smoked up here pretty soon.
I would just like to hunt a nice eater sow here in my home state of Oregon for just once, rather than having to travel so far to hunt hogs.

Where is this ranch? I looked at their web site and it looks predominately bird hunting and fishing. They mention big game but don't say what they have. Didn't see any mention of pigs.
If someone got one outside Madras recently, wouldn't suprise me. I'm sure there are still a few around. Thornton over by Ashwood (Donnybrook) was supposed to have a bunch years ago and ofering fee hunting but haven't heard of any over there in a long time. Then again I do suspect that if you got lucky you could still find one out there too.
The only stronghold seem's to be the Wells Ranch in Antelope. They say they are still there up in the sage brush. They still get them now and again. But they don't allow fee hunters or anyone else for that matter. That is the old Smith Ranch. When Earl died, his wife sold it. when earl was alive he let people hunt. In the last years he let his forman run the ranch and he shut off everybody except his friends.
Anyone comes over here looking for them, you might find them but then you'll probably have just as much luck looking for the Blue Bucket Mine!

Re: PIG HUNTING in OR
I know of 2 feral pigs killed in Oregon in the last 2 years. With all of the rifle hunters in Oregon, I would guess there would be more than 2 killed in the last 2 years and those 2 were killed by the same person.

Re: PIG HUNTING in OR
Even more info here: http://egov.oregon.gov/OISC/docs/pdf/swine_ra.pdf
In Oregon, feral pig populations have been reported in nine counties (see Appendix A):Coos and Curry Counties (Dement Creek/Sixes River area, Pistol River, and ThomasCreek), Josephine County (Rough and Ready Creek), Jackson County (Sampson, Slide, and Conde Creeks), KlamathCounty (Swan Lake Ridge, Klamath River), Wasco and
Jefferson Counties (Ashwood area), Crook County (Ochoco National Forest), and Wheeler County (Spray/Service Creek/Waterman Triangle area). Two additional populations existed along the coast of Coos County (North Spit) and in Crook County (east of Post on highway 380), but have been eradicated. The existing populations have resulted from a combination of unauthorized releases for hunting and ranch escapes and
consist of feral domestic pigs, although the Crook County population reportedly consists of feral pig-wild boar hybrids (Ferry 2004, pers comm). Reports indicate that current 5 populations are small, relatively isolated from each other, and seem to be limited by hunting pressure, and government control efforts (Huffman 2004, pers comm), although
range expansion can be expected given that pigs are food and habitat generalists (Duncan 1974, Bratton 1975, Coblentz and Baber 1987, and others).
Having just moved from San Antonio I really miss being able to hunt hogs. My last year there I took 23 and filled our freezers. The downside to these animals is all the destruction to crops and land they do. Texas farmers have a heck of a time battling these buggers.

Exactly the reason Oregon doesn't want bucket/barnyard biologist to introduce them.

Southern states can't seem to be able to control them either. They reproduce so fast it is just crazy. If I remember correctly, there is estimated to be around 1000 hogs for every person in the sate of Texas. I think that came from the Discovery Channel. A small upside to the problem is that farmers have found a huge market with the hunters. Although I am not sure how much they take in, most hunts I saw ranged anywhere from $75 up to $500 for some places. That is One/Two day hunts where some even charge trohpy fees, processing fees, and pay per pound. I guess if they can't get rid of them they at least have found a way to make a little money on them.

Re: PIG HUNTING in OR
Population of Texas = 23,904,380
x 1000 hog's/person = 23,904,380,000 (23 billion hogs)
That's a whole lotta hog, if true.

Re: PIG HUNTING in OR
A buddy of mine who is a crop duster in Central Texas is going to finish his helicopter license/training for two reasons: 1) add another spraying method to his two planes, and 2) aerial control of hogs. There are so many pigs in his area that the local farmers are ready to pay him just to get the helicopter.
Imagine getting to fly around and shoot them.....

I was off on the numbers a bit, but keep in mind these statistics were from 2006.
SOME FAST FACTS AS OF 2006:
STATES WITH FERAL HOGS: 39, plus 4 Canadian provinces.
TEXAS COUNTIES with Feral Hogs, 225 out of 254 counties.
HOG POULATION IN TEXAS; 2,000,000 (MILLION)+!
NATIONAL POPULATION is estimated at around 4,000,000.
ESTIMATED ANNUAL AGG DAMAGE from feral swine $52 MILLION!
LANDOWNER ANNUAL EXPENSE to control feral swine $7 MILLION
NATURAL LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A FERAL SWINE IS 6 to 8 years.
AVERAGE SIZE of feral swine is 100 to 150 pounds, but depending on the region can obtain sizes in excess of 600 lbs.
REPRODUCTION OF FERAL SWINE: Once a sow reaches breeding age at 7 or 8 months of age they can be responsible for 1,000 plus feral swine in a 5 year period. The State of Texas had an estimated population of around 2 MILLION at last check.
( If 1/4 are breeding sows!? )
