Why does this kind of thing always happen when the fishin really gets hot?
Mel, was this problem the result of an accident? If it was a mechanical failure did you get any advance warning?
Will keep my fingers crossed also that it is only a minor problem.

Mel...It was Sept 6 last year when my port side went....YES ZF! Mine was repairable, but the factory decided to replace it under warranty. The key spun on the input shaft, and could have been fixed relatively cheap. Let's hope that this is what yours did! Maybe $500 if you have the right mechanic

That's tough, Mel...sorry to hear it..kind of like a sick kid...
How about you bring your kicker and we'll run it alongside mine on the driftboat. They're good on gas and twin 8s should get us out there far enough...maybe Popeye can tow us back in...

Sory for your down time I'm hoping for the easy fix. When I got my boat I had to replace the tork damper, the thing that looks sike the clutch but has no pressure plate. I think we all are waiting to hear how you come out.

Turns out not to be so bad after all... or maybe anyway. Mel is reporting that upon further inspection, it is an exhaust leak. He originally thought it was tranny trouble because the back of the engine and the tranny were covered with black soot and made it look charred. He's hoping that there isn't any salt damage... The hole is on top of the rubber exhaust hose.
Mel says he thinks he'll be back in biz in a couple days!

Looks like I fried my Starboard tranny. Mechanic coming down this pm to take a look. A new one is $6-7k plus install :shocked: . Can you fed ex overnight from Italy??? (ZF gearbox). Heading back to the boat right now after a run home with fish and dirty Tuna laundery.
At least Miss B got us home without a whimper or a hint of a problem Sunday. 20 knots all the way loaded down heavy with fuel, Tuna, Ice and crew! :smile:

Just goes to show - Don't Panic! :grin:
Anyway, Mel tells me he's got a mechanic looking at it today. Says the starboard side never really did run right and the explanation was that the muffler was too close to the motor. So... he's thinking about doing a rebuild of the exhaust system. Should run better and be quieter. Ahhh, the off-season repairs.
