Re: Stack-on brand gun safe
I have one with a combo lock. What can I say it was cheap compared to other makes, it locks stuff up and opens when I use the correct combination. No fire protection. If you just want to keep your kids out and deter(slow down) burgulars then this is the deal for you.

BOLT IT TO THE FLOOR IN A CLOSET!
If a couple guys can get it on it's back, they can pry it open in less than 2 minutes. Even a $1000 safe can be done.
On the flip side it will keep the kids and their friends out of it. That alone is worth the money. I've been looking at safes for a while now. After seeing this video, you need to decide what fits you're needs and budget.

Re: Stack-on brand gun safe
One aside, I have worked in the gun industry since 1989 and don't remember more than 1 or 2 instances that I have ever heard about where someone with a safe lost anything to a theft...includind the safe itself! Just having one is the biggest deterrent to theft you can have!

Definitely eye opening. I'd argue that you will only gain about 1 minute, max, by bolting it to the floor. If the crooks are toting 5 foot breaker bars they can pry the safe off the floor in about the same amount of time as it took to open the front door, even if it is in a closet. Cement floor? 2 minutes, max.
Gotta love the internet, giving a step by step instruction on how to crack safes.
Time to take a very close look at how much of a gap your safe has between the door and the sidewalls. A tight tolerance safe would be harder to get the bar into.
Reality check though- this hasn't been an epidemic. A safe is a huge deterrent but if someone wants your stuff, they can get it. I'd rather have a safe- any safe- than nothing at all.
regards, aw

Re: Stack-on brand gun safe
most criminals are too stupid to screw with a safe, when they see it they move on. it takes too much time to crack it and they are too big to move. I have a bighorn and it was a sweet deal at $900. I think it holds 25 rifles. I got it from bulldog tuff safes in scappoose.

Re: Stack-on brand gun safe
I have done a fair amount of diving recovery work on safes. Crooks seem to like to throw them off bridges into the water. Anyway, the Stack On safes are always pried open. The larger, heavier safes are always cut open, through the side with a torch or plasma cutter.
If the crook wants in bad enough, he will get in, no matter what you are using. I think, even the most basic safe, mounted in a reasonably secure manner, will deter at least the neighborhood *******, looking to grab easy loot.

FYI - Stack On Products makes both lightweight metal security cabinets and 10 - 60 gun heavier weight safes.
The cabinet is a deterrant if anything for the kids or anyone looking for a real quick grab or "quiet" theft. These could be pried open as mentioned above, but so can Sentry's and Homak and... and.... you get the picture.
However, their safe product seems to be work for alot of folks and I have never heard of one of their "safes" or others' safes getting pried open.

Re: Stack-on brand gun safe
I've been happy enough with Stack-on....like someone else said..it was cheap. The 14 gun capacity one was something like $369 on sale in PDX 3 years ago at a major outdoor store. (forget what I paid).
