Havin\' a boat
There is nothing like havin' your own boat and getting out. Make or model doesn't matter as long as it's something that will get you where you need to go.
No more begging seats, hoping the weather wouldn't clobber our only opportunity, dragging gear up and down the docks, hoping we weren't bringing too much or too little. Most of you have been there one time or another and know the drill.
Classic example was yesterday. We had just gotten back from three days in Eastern Oregon and we were just too toasted to go over Saturday, but after reading the prediction for Sunday decided to go. That was at 8pm on Sat.
Sunday morning 6am found us at Newport and we waved to Julie Rose as we motored by Popeye's boat. G'morning. Next stop, rockpile.
Anyway, we mooched for some blackmouths and did pretty good. We also hooked a few coho on the way down, but not many. They were released as gently as possible. I also got about a 40in hali which was a lot of fun, and got him unhooked at the boat without touching him with anything, so he's waiting for someone next weekend.
We had an interesting bout with a Mako shark (I think - it sure wasn't blue) as the picture shows.
A HUGE THANK YOU to all of you who offered seats and took us out while we were waiting for our boat. We'll repay YOU by taking others out who were in the same place we were - no boat and waiting, waiting, waiting.
Pics:
Here's a happy girl
I think DipSeaDiver's sister is hooked. She's on the right.
Mako's madness (all the other coho's were released unharmed)

Re: Havin\' a boat
Now I've heard of poachers trying to cut the fins off but this is a little overboard Skein!
I don't know what you paid for the boat Jim but the smile on DipSeaDiver's face makes it worth every penny!

Looks like a great trip.
Looks like you've taken the 'fin clipping' to a new level... body clipping?
Congrats!

That shark bait picture should be blown up and kept as a reminder. Looks like the ocean was really nice. Fun to see everyone enjoy the big blue.

Re: Havin\' a boat
Jim, I know just how you feel. I regret that I was not able to get you and your mate on Sea Lion for a day or two. With smiles like those you won't soon be fishing on anyone elses boat and for good reason. Congrats again, I hope to see you out there soon.

Skein, you been pretty quiet bro. I hope the new ride is working out for you and the Halibut Queen. BTW, I am somewhat jealous of you surrounding yourself with beautiful women and fishing in a new boat.
You rock man!

Re: Havin\' a boat
Pilar,
The new ride has all but swallowed me up, although we did take three days to run to Hart Mt and take a peek at Mars. That was a cool trip in and of itself.
But we're back - and with a vengence! I think the boat is checking out pretty well so I'm starting to think further and further off shore.
Amazing how much time you can spend mounting stuff and routing cables, etc. Then a few trips to see how she fishes, and how we fish with her, plus additional shakedown. Right now we're pretty comfortable with her sea-worthiness.
We're enjoying the heck out of it - unless you couldn't tell.

Re: Havin\' a boat
Skein, Congratulations on the new boat. I made that run to Hart Mt. and then on to Frenchglen this spring. While we were up at the Hot springs, I was thinking that this has to be the best stargazing spot in the whole state. How was Mars? Were you able to make out the ice cap?

Re: Havin\' a boat
Congrats Skein and DSD on the new boat! I wish I could have made the Rock Pile 3 days in a row, but responsibilities at home kept me here!
Great shark bite pic. I would blow it up and frame it as a reminder of what perils there are in the deep blue.

Re: Havin\' a boat
Skein, Congrats with your new boat, nothing better then calling your own shots, like.......changing plans at 8pm and fishing the next morning at 6am is exactly what it's all about. What great fun it is the grand adventure.
Now your certainly breaking her in right, nic pics, great fish and happy smiles.
It's only memories for me these days, still, I'm constantly dreaming of the next boat in my life. Reading about all these great trips in the salty brine has me thinking about a sea going vessel. One of these days, I'll make a trip to Chinook to look at an Edwing.
enjoy,
Gregg

Re: Havin\' a boat
Snapset,
No, we weren't able to make out the ice cap, but we could see the redness of it and the roundness instead of just a bright point of light.
We went with an old friend who is a retired science teacher and he taught us bunches of things about the night sky. What was neat was the clarity with which we could see the constellations he was talking about.
Sitting there with the stars that bright and the coyotes singing at every point of the compass was beautiful beyond words.
I could go on all night.
Hookset,
If you're ever around we'd be glad to let you look ours over and even take you for a spin. But the label on the side of the boat isn't as important as just having one available to go whenever you can.
Life is short. We're trying to make the most of ours.

Re: Havin\' a boat
I'm sure that all the wiring of goodies only makes it an even greater experience.
Tell me Skein, how often do you just go out and sit in it, then climb out and walk around it, then back away for a more panaramic view, and then smile like a kid on Christmas morning?
You are so blessed to have a partner that shares this enthusiasm with you. A truly rare commodity.
May those days never end!

Re: Havin\' a boat
BOE,
Skein has made the "MY" mistake a few times. That's why the little 2-man tent is out in the yard. No such niceties as sleeping on the boat.
That's where WE stay when WE take OUR boat out.
M-Y,
If I can't find Skein when I need him, he is in one of two places; the computer with ifish or out "tinkering" with OUR boat.
I am really enjoying the boat. It is really fun making plans for personalizing it. We need to have our naming ceremony very soon so it isn't just "the boat".
Thanks to all of you for your moral support while OUR new toy was being constructed. You were there with us every step of the way; waiting, watching, planning...
Somehow, I missed seeing you at the bank though....
"Sea" you out there!

Re: Havin\' a boat
Carked and in the freezer. In September I'll have to go home and winterise the place and will have a smoking and canning party.
Anyone have a small chest fridg. for sale? Something I can set in my truck.
My pickled fish recipe is ferr to all. Try to get Puffins spice mix! It was the best I have ever tried. I wonder how tuna would pickle? Humm, I think I'll try it.

Re: Havin\' a boat
Yeah, Birdnest, everybody wears PFD's on my boat all the time!
Now I'm thinking about shark-suits.
You know, my lab has been known to jump in the water after a salmon dancing on the surface (once). We don't think that's such a funny trick anymore. Wow, was that an eye-opener! Chomp, chomp.

Good report, Jim. It warms my heart that you and the better half can share the open ocean.
Peace, Tom
