Default First time Halibut fishing Fri 8/22

The day started off pretty rough but ended very well. We had boat troubles with a lose wire and blown fuse. While My Dad was fixing that the other 3 of us were jigging some herring <also for the first time> when Bug_Flicker pulled up along side and asked us if we were going out. We told him we were thinking about it if we got our stuff fixed. So after getting the fuse replaced and wire fixed we headed out to the jetty to meet up with Bug_Flicker and talk for a couple minutes and out we went. We were just going to try a little bottom fishing in close when Bug_flicker hailed Pilar on the radio and he told us the bite was on and the ocean was beutiful! After a little chit chat we are headed for the pile for the first time in our boat. First drift I break off 2 fish on 40 lb mono when I switch to braid leader then all He.. breaks lose! The fight is on with my first BFB I get it about 3/4 of the way to the boat when it decided it doesnt like me and heads for "home". I finally get it to the boat and hand the rod to my dad so I can gaff it. After some thrashing the gaff rips out! Back towards the bottom it goes. I get it back up again and we decide to net it with our really big salmon net <poor net> I get it into the boat and it pins me against the side and my dad against the seat! We get everything settled and get it hung outside the boat to bleed.

53" BFB! We will be back out there!

I owe a HUGE thanx to Bug_flicker for being our wingman. If it wasnt for him being there I dont think we would have gone out at all let alone to the pile after having some minor boat troubles. Hope to hook up and fish with you again sometime.

Also a HUGE thanx to Pilar for bringing us in on the action! First drift and 3 fish hooked with one 53"er in the boat isnt too bad for a "newbie"

We also released 6 or 7 coho and 2 undersized butts. I wont even go there with how many fish we lost.

Thanx again to everyone that helped out and Nice to have met everyone we met both at the pile and back at the dock.

sorry for the long post but my blood is still pumpin!

Jon

i owe you for giving me one of your crew mates. anytime you see me out there just call me on the radio. if the oceans flat i will be there. running to the pile with you on my port side was a huge comfort. i was in no way going to run there alone.. thanks kb.
