Default Newport 8/23

After having so many good fishing trips this year, I guess we were due for a bad one. It was one of those days when the plan just didn't work out.

The plan was, halibut, tuna, possibly salmon.

Reality was; we left on a 7' swell. not too much wind. I was able to do 20 plus and hand a good ride out to the chicken ranch for the quick limit? Well...OK... no quick limit. Got a 44" on the second drop and then nothing, no bite. Finally got into some small fish about 11Am.
Well it's late, do we do tuna, or not? OK lets go poke out 10 miles and see what we see. Headed NW to where the Blitz got fish last Sat., but had no current SST picture. Man its a desert out here...no birds, no marine life, green water, 58.5 the warmest water. Yuk...the wind is building now, starting to cap, we turned around at 40 miles. Looked at the new SST picture today to see that we were starting from the coldest water and running right up the cold zone, needed to be much farther north.

Now it's a slow go comming back in, well lets try the pile for a while. Put the riggers down for a salmon but the small Ling's, Canary's and Coho won't leave them alone long enough to catch a salmon. We finally take a small king. Too windy now to troll and it's getting late so we bagged it and head home.

Part two of the plan called for tuna out of Depoe today, but I'm just too tired to go again, going to try again this week.

It was one of those days when it just did't come together, lots of traveling for not many fish.....more good days are coming!!!!!

Good luck,
Jerry

Hang in there Jerry, at least your boat is running!

I think mine is to but I'm taking her down to the Willamette here in a few minutes to make sure. Replaced most of the outdrive with one I found in Tillamook. We'll see what happens. Listen for any loud booms!
