Rod Info Please
I went to sportsmans today, I want to get a 10' casting rod. After hearing all the talk about Lamiglass and G Loomis I was thinking [I know thats dangerous] maybe its time to cowboy up and spend some money on a good rod. After checking Lamiglass and G Loomis 250.00-390.00 I saw the Griggs at 49.00 and Shaimano 59.00 They seem to have equal number of guids and pretty close in action. My question is why do the others cost some much what is the diffrence.

Re: Rod Info Please
For the most part I think the only time you might want to pony-up for the high-dollar stuff is for bottom-contact fishing (higher modulus graphite=better feel). If you're a guide fishing day in day out, you'll get less shoulder fatigue with the more expensive, lighter rods. Other than that, it's really cool to say you have 15 Loomis rods in the garage

Re: Rod Info Please
I fish with a buddy that guides for a living he uses only loomis rods. i have fished with them many many times thru the years some I liked some I didnt. even though I could buy his used rods when he gets new ones I stick to the cheaper rods. I do own one lomis rod its a back bouncer he gave it to me for my birth day and I flat love it. I still think unless you can write it off on your tax's or have money to burn I would stick to the less expensive rods. I recently purchased a diawa heartland rod to drift fish with and it is a very sweet rod plus it was only 59 clams at bimart. I looked thru their catalog when I purchased mine and seems like I seen them listing a rod like the one your after you might check them out.

Re: Rod Info Please
I will not get into it...... but you would be amazed what you are spending a lot of money on thinking you are getting something you really are not. Spend the money on a sensative high end rod for drift fishing when you need to feel the bite. Other than that go cheaper with a good warranty. Lamiglas is a great rod with a great warranty. Send me an e-mail if you want additional information that I cannot mention on here because of board rules

Re: Rod Info Please
Luv my GL3 1263....10 1/2 foot casting 8-12lb...
Slightly heavy for steelies, but doubles as a great big river drift rod and light chinook rod... Also these rods are great for mooching and backtrolling....
The shimano's would be my second choice.

Re: Rod Info Please
I have a 10'6" shimano convergence, I love it. There is absolutely no reason to spend that much money for a rod. I paid $59 for it and right now at sportsmans they are on sale for %10 off. I would not trade it straight across for any G-loomis I have seen.

Re: Rod Info Please
Go with a custom Rainshadow rod. The quality and the price cant be beat. You can usually save up to 50% and still own a fantastic stick.
I build my own and love every one.

Re: Rod Info Please
I've found a huge difference between my Berkley IM7 #8-12 and my Loomis IMX 1084c 8-12. The Loomis is much more sensitive, lighter, and just plain feels better. I now use my Berkley's for throwing spoons and bobber fishing. I was sick to my stomach when I spent that $355 on the Loomis, but very glad I did now. Don't get me wrong though, I do like the Berkley IM7's just not for drift fishing. My next rod might be a GLX or Lami Titanium.

You might want to check the price and Bi your Lamiglass rods at an Oregon owned Mart . They will "special Order" Lami rods for a good price.

Re: Rod Info Please
I went ahead and had a custom rod made. $200 got me a 10Ft lami Pro Certified blank with cork handle and 13 alloy guides. 8-17lb. The extra few guides make a big difference in casting distance and accuracy placing your cast in the right spot. It's extremely sensitive especially with braid. The 10 ft pole does most of the work when fighting the fish and you can set the drag a little lighter. I use it for steel and salmon. The guy did a great job laying it up and assembling it. I was glad I did it.
I couldnt' find a list of fish on Reel Fishing 3 but it has over 30 freshwater fish if you are still interested.

Re: Rod Info Please
I own a 10 1/2 foot Lamiglass 10-20# rated. $139. Wouldn't trade it for anything. All the guys know me from Cedar Creek and Herman Creek because I stick a crap-load of fish with it. Makes a nice whooshing sound when you set the hook too!

Re: Rod Info Please
In response to your question about why high end rods are so expensive. They use a very high grade of graphite that is custom designed to the manufacturers specifications. They also use portugese cork and the best fugi guides available. They have high tech equipment and take the time and care in designing there rods and the people that work there have a lot of pride in there craftmanship.

Re: Rod Info Please
I use a ten and a half foot Shakespear rod, line weight 2-8 for Steelhead. I like it b/c it can really cast far with light weight, but I am going to buy a nine foot Lami, line weight 2-6 for fishing steelhead with. I know thats a pretty light rod but its a blast reeling one in with that light of a rod. Last week I landed a 14-15 pound Steelhead with my Shakespear and it just took a little longer to land, but you just don't get the feel like you do with the more expensive rods. If it was me making the decision, I would say go with the more expensive rods, more feel and better quality I think.

Re: Rod Info Please
Higher modulus rods are definately more sensitive.. people who say that the lower end rods are "great" haven't fished with a GL3, rogue, Certified pro, esprit, lamiglas ti, or IMX for any period of time. For feel applications there is no comparision. Between a lamiglas g 1000 series and a lower end rod there really isn't much of a difference. (the g1000 series are a lower moduluss graphite and are heavier)
Lance,
as far as using noodle rods (2-6, and 2-8's) they are innapproiate for fishing during nate season because they put too much stress on the fish when fished from the shore. (tireing it to death) Plus it takes to damn long to land a fish with one and gets it almost to the rude point clogging up crowded water.

Re: Rod Info Please
I've had a 9.5' Shimano Stimula for a while now and I have to say it is an excellent rod. Very good craftsmanship and quality. (Hasn't failed me yet). I picked it up for $56 on sale.

Re: Rod Info Please
Are the GLoomis kits (msrp $180) a good deal? I have a Redington Redfly and I am looking for a step up. But for the price, it seems like I am getting a similar deal considering the rest of my gear (reel, line, etc.) would add up to about the same price. I prefer using a drift boat when fishing. Any suggestions?

Re: Rod Info Please
WRO,
The river that I will be using that light of rod has almost no natives on it. I have done research on the river and talked to people who have fished it for along time, so I really don't need to worry about catching a Native. And another thing is that there is usually not that much people fishing. I do know what you mean, and if I was fishing on a river with more people and Natives, then I would go to a bigger rod and line.

Re: Rod Info Please
I have a number of brand name rods(berkley, shimano,Lamiglass) in my arsenal, but almost all collect dust while I put my Loomis rods to work. If you can afford the G Loomis brand and you are still asking why, this only means you have not really played with the Loomis rods. Big name guides use them for a reason. Hook a hot steelhead on one and you will understand why you paid so much. Loomis rods have made the difference between no fish and several fish in a day more than once. This is really true on days when no one was hooking up!

Re: Rod Info Please
Well after looking long and hard I decided to purchase the Shimano Convergence I got the 10' in a 8-12 casting, put a Carado BSF on it and cant wait to try it.Since I cant get the hang of jigging with a spinnig rig I think this will work. The one thing that pushed me over was the fact that the store told me it had a LIFE TIME OVER THE COUNTER WARRANTY. Works for me well thanks for all your imput I think it really helped

Re: Rod Info Please
I have fished with Loomis, Lamiglas, Fenwick, and Rainshadow rods. I really enjoy all of them. A couple of weeks ago I bought a 12.5' Shimano Convergence rod (I even posted about it). I LOVE IT! Just today I received 4 more Shimano Convergence rods. They are 10.5' 4-6lb line. I paid $140 for all 4 of them and I can't wait to try one. They are fantastic.
The only (very small) complaint I have is that they are a little heavier then my Loomis and Lamiglas rods. Oh well. For $35 each I will take a couple of extra ounces.
I think higher priced Loomis and Lamiglas rods do have a place and they are worth it in some circumstances. I also think lower priced rods have a place and the Shimano Convergence fits that bill.

Re: Rod Info Please
G-Loomis and Lamiglass if you want quality if you want something to thrash on and don't care get a lower quality
I worked for Larry's Sports Ctr and NW Outfitters years ago. I was able to get G-Loomis and Lamiglass for next to nothing. I have fished with others "poles" the loomis and lami are "Rods" very good quality and and have last over 12 years and lotsa feesh
