Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
6 ling cod - 6 chinook - and a chicken butt!
Rockpile 8/22 - Halibut fishing slow and spotty, Chinook fishing about average, Ling Cod fishing above average. Fresh Herring at the green can in the bay. Big chinook had bunches of Sardines in their stomach, and Sardines for bait worked well.
Lots of Canary, Yelloweye, and Vermillion rockfish dead for no good purpose.

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
Hey Brad,
Fantastic catch.
Did you get the salmon and lings at the Rockpile too?
I took Smily and a newbie to the ocean out of the Columbia for a limit of coho and 13 crab in the bay on Fri. Fishing around the CR buoy was hit and miss with all the unclipped, and partial clipped coho out there.

Well done. As much as I like a shiney fish, a cleaned fish in the cooler is always nicer.

Good job Brad, the green boat crew can be spotted by the bent rods and a net waving around on a pretty much continuous basis. I know now to look for fish under your boat UG, whenever possible.
Can you believe the incredible quality of the Rockpile Kings this summer?

You know me beach. I always let the kids hold up the biggest fish--Brad doesnt. Ask him the dirty little secret about his limit (my kid hooked his last fish for him! )
I am not, however, competitive
Honestly, as you know from our trip--sometimes, others have to pick up the slack for ya In the future, you will address me as Sir, boy

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
Nice haul guys. How long after we left did it take you to finish up? I learned a valuable lesson yesterday, ditch the 30# leader. The fishing on the bug flicker was great, but the catching wasn't the best. The Bocaccio tasted good last night. But some butt and nook would've gone down well. Maybe next time? Pack hunting was a blast, and the ugly green boat was waving the net quite often.
Wild hawg, what does the boy prefer? Daily doubles or salmon doubles?

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
Ramstrong,
Ya know, the cool thing about Isaac is he would probably tell ya "both".
He's a freshman who will start on JV, and it looks like he'll be playing some varsity as well!
He had doubles all last week AND was a leadership counselor at his former Junior High for 4 hours each day--suffice it to say, he earned a break. Poor kid was so whooped he slept 13 hours Sunday AND took a 2 hour nap.
Was great meeting you and your bro-in law.
I've been on both sides of the fish catching--suffice it to say your day will come too!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">They are fantastic... look at the color of the meat in the second pic, yum yum, couple of the ones we caught had no eggs/milt and were probably a year from spawning. There going to be some big springers next year I be thinking.

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
Wildhawg,
I was able to hook up. It was just that crap 30# ultra green. That's OK, next time I'll be ready for the suckers!
You've got a good boy there. Being that tired and still filling limits for Brad Talk about public service. I remeber doubles like they were yesterday. But I wasn't that athletically gifted. All of the Jock genes went to my sister.

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
Yeah, Issac is a pretty good kid, every time I asked him to do something he hopped right to it, and I dont think I heard him complain once all day long. (which can be unusual for a kid his age)
He was getting kinda worried on that last fish though... Charlie was fooling around with some little Chinook, asking if we were going to keep it or not. (we had a double on) and Issac is holding the rod with the other fish slowly getting spooled. I told Chuckles to dump the little fish and hurry cause I had to back down on the bigger fish before Issac got spooled.
"HEY DAD - HURRY UP - ITS NOT STOPPING - IM RUNNING OUT OF LINE! HURRY! HURRY!"

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
UG,
Nice catch. Just one question though. You stated, Lots of Canary, Yelloweye, and Vermillion rockfish dead for no good purpose. Can I ask why? If it's a problem releasing them, I can tell you a way that is foolproof and you will save all those nice red from being crab or shark bait or big red balls headed for the horizon. Just an offer from a California Transplant if you want to know.

Tuna Chaser,
I read your post on the other thread and someone else posted about the same thing as far as decompression of rockfish. Are you pretty confident that some of them make it?
Also, vermillion rockfish don't have to be released on a halibut trip.

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
Ramstrong, I gave up on the light leaders a year ago. I had to be reminded a few weeks ago by a king that started running and like a freight train just kept picking up speed. I tried to put the brakes on with my thumb and he went even faster. POP! end of story and the last time I'll use 40# leaders at the rockpile. No excuses now. Feeder Kings are not leader shy at all and I use Berkely big game 60# for kings or Maxima ultra green 100# for the flat ones.
Brad, I've seen you catch alot of fish. You have a very fishy boat. Hope to be seeing more of that soon.

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
TC
We released one that swam right back down, and looked in good shape. The other, Its eyes were popped from its sockets, and I doubt anything would have saved it. Recompressing cant undo torn tissues. I read your suggestion on another thread, and that might be worth a try. Thanks.
When I said lots of dead.... I was talking about the effect of the whole fleet, one or two fish killed times 20 or 30 boats has got to add up. My first thought on pulling up to one particular area was "What are all these crab pot bouys doing way out here?"

Re: Lings, Kings, and a Chicken Butt!
I am trying to find the research that I read on this years ago before I started doing it myself. The California Department of Fish and Game did a study on this type of release years ago and if I remember correctly, they indicated they had better than a 50% survival rate, which is much better than a 100% death rate. I'm doing some research on it now and I will post it here as soon as I find it.
