It's true. If you want a SW spring bear tag, you can buy one today BUT this is your only spring bear opportunity.

Can you purchase the '09 tag with your '08 license? Wheels.

No, you must purchase a 2009 license to get a 2009 spring bear tag...as per the point of purchase agent at bi mart.

So I wonder whats gonna happen with leftover tags for that unit? Every year there seems to be some amount of leftover for down there.

I called ODFW and you have to purchase your 2009 license. I went and picked up licenses for me and my wife today. Lookout bears!

I used the new on-line system to get my non-resident SW tag...pretty slick and a quick process.

There have been left overs in the past until the date when you can buy one over the counter. Ultimately they all get sold. I think this is the reasoning behind the change. Why make us draw if it is for sure anyway.

As I see it...you can apply for a draw tag and if un-successful you can buy a SW tag over the counter...if there are any left. You cannot buy a SW tag and then apply for a drawing. It will be interesting to see if there are any left after the draw results are out. That is the 64 million dollar question. I bet most or all will be gone. I wanna go, so I am taking the path of least resistance...Over the counter SW.

I know that the guys who always had SW as their first choice (and always drew it) will feel really great about not having to go through the hassle of applying as well as saving that whopping $4.50 application fee (pressure from this group [per Doug Cottam ODFW bio] given as reasons for the change) but the rest of us that used to have it as a second choice, may not get to hunt at all (if we want to try to hunt around home) as it now takes a preference point to draw my home unit (Alsea). How much beer does $4.50 buy?

Mixed feelings...

If it's like any other general tag, it will be the day before the hunt begins.

Although the tags may be sold out prior to then because there is a limited number.
