My husband and I went out for Halibut two weeks ago. The seas were good and we both had our halibut by 11:00 AM. So we went for our Salmon next. By 1:00 we limited the boat and went back to New Port. My husband Greg, caught a 82 pound halibut and mine was 65 pounds. We were at the dock and Greg opened the fish box in the bow of our boat and hauled my halibut out with the gaff. He laid the fish on the dock and went back into the fish box for his fish. He was half way to laying it on the dock when the fish came off the gaff and splashed into the water beside the boat and sunk fast under the boat. We looked at each other in total disbelief. :depressed: A guy in the boat next to ours said he had a long rope with a hook like anchor on it, so Greg started dragging for the fish. I jumped in our boat and got my G Loomis rod with a pink jig and started jigging. Ten minutes into my jigging routine, I hooked something big and started reeling it up. Sure enough here comes Greg's fish. Greg got the gaff and hooked the fish. He starts to lift it onto the dock when it comes loose again! Splash, back to the bottom it goes. At this point, Greg notices the hook on the gaff has straightened out. So I go back to jigging

Another ten minutes go by and I hooked something big again. I started reeling slowly and here comes Greg's halibut again.

I hooked it in it's lips  . Greg gets ahold of it with his hands and pulls it up onto the dock. The people watching all this could not believe it, and said it was the best fish story they ever saw.. Yippee!!! What are the odds of getting your halibut back. So now ropes and a new gaff are needed for the next halibut we unload off our boat.
